New Uniti Core
Posted by: PBenny1066 on 06 October 2016
As an early adopter of the Unitiserve, and still happily using it, I was just wondering what the newly announced Uniti Core might be ? Good to see that NAIM haven't thrown in the towel with music servers, as some had predicted they would.
After a quick look at the new announcement it seems like a new UServe. But I wonder what might be the difference between the Core and the Serve ? It does have a linear PS.
Any ideas ?

Perhaps Phil Harris could confirm?
The term "Renderer" is usually used in the context of a device which takes in a file and plays it so I guess that you could say that the Core is a renderer but I think it's best to categorize it as a ripper / storage device / server / player rather than renderer.
So ... I think it's best to refer to the Core as a "hard disc player" and the streamers as "renderers".

And we don't know yet whether it will have higher sound quality or not. I think we can rely on it not being worse.

Despite all the goodies, the CORE loses, compared to the unitiserve: Internet Radio, control via naim server remote handset, and VGA output.

VGA? As in Video Graphics Adapter? It's a music player, and possibly one that might be competitive with, amongst other things, Melco, MacMini/AUdirvana, innuos Zenith, NAS+ND5XS or NDX as renderer.
And do we actually know about remote control of it yet?
Core is not technically a renderer, only a server. When it plays locally, it doesn t use its UPnP server. It plays the file directly. IIRC it uses a Samba server to browse the files.

Better PS than the Userve, replaceable HD, very important since a disk will break down often before the rest of the hardware and HD sizes just keeps growing all the time, and a trip to Naim HQ is costly.
But the lack of internet radio is bad if you only want one server in your system and not both a server and a streamer. Finally we lose the desktop client, and Naim is not going to develop a Win/Mac software for the servers, at least this has not been announced. I hope repair cost for my dead NS01 will be reasonable since the DTC and the remote is my primary way to control the player, and the smartphones app even though it is getting better, is a big step backwards!

I fully agree, Claus! The server remote for unitiserve/NS01 is nice, and connecting a small VGA display makes them really nice to use. Whilst the display of my iPad is better still, nothing beats the server remote handset.
It has become quiet around the core - any news?
this month slight delay for some reason.
'Awaiting final software approvals before they can be released' is the message that was passed down to me last week.

I'm on the Podium at number three at my dealer.
An interesting assumption
I heard it in Salisbury last week. It sounds great and as it has neither a switched mode power supply nor a Microsoft OS, you can swap discs yourself if you want to, using HDD or SSD and/or a NAS and you control it with the same Naim app that you use for streamers, what's not to like?

Well, some might miss a handset remote control and display output, or Internet Radio, but that is it.
My dealer in uk says "january" for what its worth. I'm getting their first.
Well I will miss the internet radio and the desktop client, not to mention the remote control as well
I will wait until my uS goes bust and then evaluate my options ... after all its just another audio NAS ...

As a local player , working together with a dac V1 ? It 's an intereresting couple , or the Melco 's NA1 is the best option ?
It would be good if Naim gave us long suffering US owners a trade-in on the new Uniti Core.....
Mine has had 2 hdd failures in 3yrs!!
Superuniti and Muso have been perfect, but the US has been a joke especially for the price!
