New Uniti Core

Posted by: PBenny1066 on 06 October 2016

As an early adopter of the Unitiserve, and still happily using it, I was just wondering what the newly announced Uniti Core might be ? Good to see that NAIM haven't thrown in the towel with music servers, as some had predicted they would.

After a quick look at the new announcement it seems like a new UServe. But I wonder what might be the difference between the Core and the Serve ? It does have a linear PS.

Any ideas ?

It would be good if Naim gave us long suffering US owners a trade-in on the new Uniti Core.....

Mine has had 2 hdd failures in 3yrs!!

Superuniti and Muso have been perfect, but the US has been a joke especially for the price!

and still hopeful on the Core i guess

Willing to give it a second chance

The biggest problems with the US are the power supply,non-removable hdd and the ancient XP operating system and the new Core has addressed these!!

I still would have preferred an external PSU. :frime:

As for the rest, the question still remains whether UC, HDD or SSD, will beat US or Melco N1Z for all SQ matters. :ange:

Or you can (literally) hang a drive off the rear usb port -- something like the tiny Samsung SSD drives which can be at least 512Gb

Not likely, the clue is in the name! Maybe they'll release a Classic range server to replace the HDX, in which case one might expect upgradeability.

The UC Quick Start Guide is now available on the website. It is a very quick guide indeed. At least a quick sign.  :]

Its just a Quick start guide. I expect the full manual will be along in due course.

The Core is said to deal with up to 100,000 tracks in storage. Is this limit already on the Uniti Serve database system? (Not too many will come close to 100k of tracks, but perhaps some will).

I think you'll find that is the maximum tracks as allowed by the Core's on
board storage which if I remember rightly is 8GB maximum.External storage
can be much larger.

There is not going to be a full manual - there is an interactive resource available from the Core product page...

Phil, if you're reading this, can you confirm that the Unitiserve/N-Serve playlist facility will not work on the Core? I ask because the alternative of using Naim app playlists is, in my experience, prone to corruption, and difficult or impossible to back up. A few other people have posted their problems on this issue recently, so I thought I'd raise it here.

Hi,

I'm not really sure what you're asking - the n-Serve app won't work with the Core so you won't be able to use the n-Serve app to create playlists on the Core. You'll create playlists on the Naim app and they'll be available across your streamers from the app...

What I was attempting say is that the 'old' N-Serve playlist system works well, and it's a shame that the Core loses it in favour of the Naim app system. I've always found it susceptible to corruption, playlists often vanish when the app is updated, and once lost, can't be restored from backup. A number of other people have posted about these problems recently, so maybe it's an area that needs a bit of tweaking?

Why is everyone so very nice to Naim ... Chris talked about "tweaking" ... sorry, if the playlist behaviour is as stated by other posters then it is broken and it's not tweaking that is required but correct implementation or remove the behaviour entirely.

Using servers and such to explicitly create/back-up playlists is not an acceptable option to me.

All in all, I am still very concerned about the Naim app software as it is crucial to the usability of the streamers/servers and, if not usable, then it is a deal breaker and I'll go elsewhere for streaming/serving.

Another example of what I have mentioned in other threads, that the entire digital area is still very immature. Seems like Naim have not quite got it that the hardware and software are equally as important in such an arena ... although they do seem to have recognised this with their bespoke Linux-based platform, they don't seem to have quite got it with the user experience.

I'm going off to play some vinyl now

Hi Chris, do the previous issues with the naim app, which you mention, also apply to the new version 5.0, please? (I thought this has been substantially revised, and of course it now includes operation of the Core). Thanks, Stefan

I also prefer playlists stored on the UServe for the reasons above plus IMO the best way to control the playlists is from Desk Top Client where you can  see tracks in any order you like and quickly edit the lists. I assume that DTC or equivalent won't be available with the Core.

Hi Stefan, I have found some playlists becoming corrupted in 5.0, so yes, I think it's an issue that still needs fixing. Weather this is an issue for Core users remains to be seen, of course, and they will not have the option of using the reliable N-Serve alternative.
