Using Audirvana with Mu-so
Posted by: Simon Clifford-Smith on 06 October 2016
I am trying without success to use Audirvana on a MacBookPro connected by an Ethernet cable to my Naim Mu-so. I can us it using Air-Play and also using an Optical cable. Any suggestions would be greatly received.
Kind regards,
Simon
You will need a network switch, with both connected to a switch via a network cable.
Or a network router like Apple Airport Extreme with multiple LAN outputs (it acts as a switch too).
Simon - as you've found that doesn't work. To play files from to the Muso over your Ethernet network you'd need to install a UPnP server onto the Mac.

That obviously as well.
So - UPnP server and a proper network connections. Should be Ok after that.
Hello James,
Thanks for your reply. I want to use Ethernet as it can handle 96Kbits 24bit files and Air Play only uses 16bit files. I use my Optical connection for my TV, and it's a pain changing over the cable all the time. Sometimes I wish the Mu-so had 2 Optical inputs.

Hi Simon,
As Adam mentioned above, you'll need to wire both units to your network router (lets keep this simple to start with) if it has spare ports (if not you'll need a switch). To play the music files from your Mac you'll need to install a UPnP server. No need to use Audirvana.

Hello James,
I do have Asset UPnP on my Mac, and it works with my Naim App, however, I don't know how to configure Audirvana and Asset UPnP.

Hello James,
I want to use Audirvana because I prefer the sound it produces.

Hi Simon,
You just need to use Asset - no need for Audirvarna. I personally don't use Asset (used a different UPnP server when i ran a Mac) so i'm sure someone will pop up who can help you set that bit up.
James
Many thanks Adam and James for all your help, it is very much appreciated.

This is the basic network set up you'd be ceeating (pic courtesy of Mike-B). NAS becomes your Mac.
No problem - sorry i can't help you with Asset. I've understand why you want to use Audirvana as it's an excellent music player on the Mac (used to use it myself but straight into a DAC via the USB port). When you use a UPnP server, it will just serve the files from the Macs hard drive and won't use any of Audirvanas optimisation hence why it's not needed when using the MuSo in this way. Hope that helps a bit and good luck with getting Asset configured (or even deploying another UPnP server onto the Mac - not sure what is flavour of the month at the moment). Might be worth having a search or starting a new thread specifically around Mac UPnP servers.

The problem is that Audirvana and Asset do completely different things and I'm not sure that Audirvana can be configured to play files from a UPNP server, although I'm sure someone will correctly if it can. I'm pretty sure too that it isn't able to send music via Ethernet to a streamer.
As others have said above in order to stream to your Muso you would need a UPNP server, such as Asset, which is very good, running on your Mac. Unlike Audirvana the UPNP server only makes the music available, in a format that is configurable, to our Muso which then plays the music. Audirvana, on the other hand, plays the music itself, usually into a dac. They each serve a different purpose and I would guess that what you need for your Muso, in addition to the advice above, it to use a UPNP server and not Audirvana
Audirvana is a high quality renderer (some call it a transport), that outputs digital audio, via either the Mac's sound card (optical or electrical spdif), or, with highest quality, via usb. I'm pretty certain it can't be configured to output anything via ethernet.
Audirvana can play music files on a NAS on the same network as the Mac as well as stored within it, but can't send anything to Muso except by direct digital connection (usb, or optical or electrical spdif) - if Muso has a digital input socket.
As for playing to the Muso, as some others have said, music stored on the Mac can be streamed to any network-attached (wired or wireless) renderer or combined unit like Muso or Naim streamer, simply by installing a UPnP player on the Mac. When I had an ND5XS I used Serviio UPnP player (which is free) which worked well.
