Doubts about an upgrade to SN2 from old olive series
Posted by: lormar on 08 October 2016
i often read the forum, but in this case i still have a lot of doubts. i am sorry and i am sorry also for my very basic english. I am going to get new speakers, from Kef LS50 to Kudos Super10. What do you think about a possibile upgrade from NAC 72+HC+NAP180 to SN2+HC? Is it a real upgrade? In this case i need to add a prephono. Or could be better an upgrade from ND5XS to NDX? I am a little confused so i hope in yours recommendations.
Properly set up and serviced separates will usually beat an integrated in my opinion. You have an excellent system there, very similar to my own. Have you had it serviced? The next logical step would be to improve the NAC or the NAP. Advice on this forum tended to favour the NAP upgrade first, which is what I have just done. An excellent move ![]()
If the 72and Nap 180 are recently serviced they will be superb and less expensive than the SN 2. Just get a serviced Hi Cap to be in audio nirvana. Key is " recently serviced".
Just have a listen and compare....sighs....
An audition of a Supernait 2 might be a good idea at this point. If it works for you, then it works.
Alternatively, if you are unable to audition, then buying a serviced pair of NAP135s will certainly wake up the Kudos S10 to good effect (he says, having tried this very combination) and would not be a risk.
There is no need to rush out and change the 72/Hicap for a while yet, so long as they are both serviced.
Hope this helps, FT
No, i regret but anything had been serviced. It is not easy, but i think i can try to have at home a SN2 to compare. Could be more harder to arrange a service here in Italy without sending abroad the amp, the preamp, the HC . What should be the first to be serviced?
I guess everybody has some doubts about their next purchase, honestly only you can answer your own question, because in the end you have to satisfy yourself.
I could give you my opinion, but in reality people do what they want to do regardless of what someone may suggest.
I owned the system you have now at one time, and it was a great sounding system, I now own the system you are contemplating, one is not really better than the other, they are different, in their presentation and refinement.
I think your current system would need a service, if it's never been done, it is probably long overdue, amps usually require a service first, followed by the power supply, and lastly the pre-amp.
Good luck in your quest, just make it fun, and it will be worth the time and effort.
Two 135 is for sure a good idea, but i was thinking to decrease the number of boxes rather than increase it. If i could only have a room dedicate to music!
One option you might wish to consider is swapping the ND5xs, 72 and Hicap for a 272, and then swapping the 180 for a 250DR. That will give you a two box system that will work very well with the Super 10s. Later on, you could add an XPS to improve it further.
A nice solution there from HH, so long as your music is digital.
I have both an SN2 (no HiCap) and a 72/HiCap/140. The former replaced the later as my main system though I kept the Olives for a second system. The SN2 drives Neat Motive SE2's and the Olives Neat Iotas. Both use sonos as a source the SN2 via a Rega DAC.
I compared both driving the SE2s in my living room and whilst the Olives are fun the SN2 is more controlled, has greater clarity and is generally more grown up sounding. I am not great at expressing how I appreciate sound sorry. All my own opinions of course.
Hi,
I recognized that to get the best of naim means to have a all bunch of boxes, but as state above it looks that the 272+250 combo is one of the best choice for you.
I´ve also been thinking about that, but for now the adding the 135 to my sistem with the supercap was the most important step upwards that I did.
And from a financial point of view more chepear than move to the 272/250 combo.
If you're thinking NDX, go for it - source first. Then sell the 180 and buy an olive 250. A 72/HC/250 takes a LOT of beating; you probably have to go to 282/HC/250 in the current range to advance on it in any meaningful way.
So many useful advices, thanks a lot to you all! At the moment the SN2 is the plan B and my priority list could be:
Service 72&HC
Service 180 or find an used, already serviced 250 (250 olive?250.2?250 DR?)
Upgrade streamer to NDX.
Let me say one more thing . Most of the time i listen music with a ND5XS but i have also a Sondek (lingo, Kore et) that i still use with great pleasure from time to time. So i do not want to give up the turntable . Thanks again
Keep what you have and get it serviced gets my vote. And there is nothing wrong with a 180. It's a really good amp.
