Anyone pair a NAP250DR with Magico S1?
Posted by: Nexsky on 08 October 2016
Had the opportunity to audit the Magico S1mkii at a dealer place and was impressed by the overall tonal accuracy and sound of this pair of speaker. It was driver by a pair of Solution pre power.
I was wondering if my NAP250DR was capable of driving this pair of speaker?
Hi,
How big is your room?
Piotr
I don't have experience of the S1, but I do have a pair of V2s on my 250DR, and despite the claim usually made that the V2s require serious power, I find the results on my system really impressive - such a clean, clear, transparent sound.
As always in the end it comes down to your system, and your ears so It would be well worth seeing if you could demo the S1s with a 250, ideally in your room, if not possibly taking your amp to the dealer.
Good luck!
My room is 4.2m by 3m. Generally i am given an impression that Magico speaker are hard to drive as they are always seen to be driven by big beef mono blocks each having >120w. Thus this ring a bell on me if i am overly ambitious to drive the S1 on my humble 250DR. The spec of the S1 mkii are as follow
Sensitivity: 86dB Impedance: 4 Ohms.
They seem like an awful lot of speaker to hang on the end of a 282/250. You'd normally expect to see this sort of speaker with something like a 552/500. But then again, Robbor seems very happy with the V2.
I demo'd a pair of S1's on the end of my 282/250DR a couple of months ago .. they were for sale privately and the owner graciously allowed me to try them for a couple of weeks.
At no time did I feel as though the 250DR was struggling to drive them and my decision not to buy them had nothing to do with the synergy of the system. I just thought the sound delta between the S1's and my Totem Hawks was not worth the extra expense.
Hope this helps.

From my experience S1 is really hard to drive with 250.2 so with S1 mkII and 250 DR should be similar,
much easier for amps (and much better in sound quality) are S3 but your room is unfortunately too small,
about year ago I made a comparison between S1 and Kudos S20 (both with 272/250.2 - 5m by 6m room) and for me Kudos was a winner,
maybe it is hard to believe it but it was hard to get loud sound level form S1 with 250.2 ....
no such problems with Kudos S20
I also made a comparison between S3 and Kudos T88 (both with CDS3/552/500) and this contest Magico was winner by a large margin,
so my recommendation to you taking in to consideration your room size is Kudos S10
remaining money you can spend on source/amp upgrades

Hi John, do you at any point of time feel the S1 is lack of bass consider it is a sealed box design?

Thanks for your comment unfortunately there isn't any Kudo agent here in my country. I will look around for now.

Nexsky: No, never. I found the bass to be crisp and tight .. listening to Yo Yo Ma's Unaccompanied Cello Suites by J. S. Bach was really quite sublime as was the double bass on the Musica Nuda CD .. there's also another track with great bass lines to test out a system and that's "Thug" on the ZZ Top Eliminator album. The S1's passed with flying colors.

Interesting finding.... I am not sure if i can get a home trial for the S1 on my Naim. But i like what i hear at the dealer place on the S1 but taking into serious consideration that he is driving it using almost 100k usd worth of amps, it might be the real reason why the S1 sound so fluid and effortless. So having to look at the humble 250DR, it might not be doing justice if i really bring it home.
At the later part i had the pleasure to listen to the S5 and was totally mesmerize by it when it was playing "Jazz Variants - The O-zone Percussion Group"
Totally different league...
