NAIT 5 as a power amp?

Posted by: BigH47 on 08 October 2016

Having recently recovered "our" NAIT 5 from no1 son, as soon as I centered the balance I realised that it has a very faint left channel. So I thought I could use the power amp fed by my spare NAC42 and 4 -4 SNAIC, but although the manual doesn't show that configuration I thought it possible.

Is it possible?

I was hoping to tide me over as a spare room system for a short time until I can arrange some suitable treatment for it.

Definitely. I used mine in this way with a NAC202. Ain't nothing shabby about the Nait 5's power amp.

Sorry, can't remember how though

Thanks Chris, I thought it should be possible.

I think I can see how, but to save a pile of smouldering metal I need connection plan.

Howard, Richard's a dead cert. But it's Saturday night, he understandably might have the evening off. Hopefully others can help...

Best, C.

PS. Your eldest son has been a lucky lad, and owes you big time if he's returned it nadgered (imo).

Switch off first. I think.... you carefully remove the ribbon connector. Leave the plug in the central socket (signal out A). Connect the Snaic4 to using the left hand (when viewed from rear) of the two ribbon connector sockets (marked Input). Other end of Snaic4 to your vintage NAC.

Richard will confirm or correct, I'm sure

Sadly the fault is in the power section, so still no full sounds, even with 42 pre.

Slightly diverting question: whould a Nait 5(i) as poweramp work as nicely as a Nap 100?

I've an AV2 which currently operates as Dac, and I think about either buying a Nait5, Nait5i or Nap 100.

That's  a downer BigH. I was looking forward to coming home to a new thread of yours, NAC42 with Nait 5's power amp is a giant-slayer!!!

Chris,

Well even with only one half working it's easily as good as a 300 and not far short of a 500!

Is that the sort of thing I should say?

Some TLC to arrange now, I thought the 250 would be next up but I guess faults over ride  service.

Some more suggestions:

'it is pushing well above its weight'

'its running circles around the NAP300'

I don't understand the bit about '250 would be up next', Howard.

In all seriousness, I had high hopes for the serendipitous pairing of NAC42 and power section of nait 5. After all, wasn't the NAC42 and NAP110 said to put the Nait 2 in the shade?

To Chris.... Last year i ran a 42.5/110, 72/110, 72/Hi/160 all against my Nait 2. The only combo that i thought was on a level plaing field, but not better, was the last one. It was only when the volume got very high that the 72/Hi/160 stayed together better. At normal to low volume, i'd say the Nait2 edged it.

Chris my main system 250 Olive was serviced about 10 years ago, so is due for another  service.

It can go back to being back at the top of the pile as I have sorted the NAIT 5 out, it was a faulty speaker cable, although it tests OK, swapped to another pair and both channels are singing away wonderfully, even tried the 42 ore as well.

5 will need a service too very soon, maybe it should be next but I think the main system comes first, at least I have temporary back up whilst 250 is away.

Alls well that ends well.
