New 500DR in the house

Posted by: Skip on 08 October 2016

Seems like mine is among several threads which might be combined.  Amazing dynamics right out of the box.   Dropped right in to my existing system.  Brings the CD555 to life.  Still working up to the Superline.  I am sure it will mellow but so far so good.

Skip,

Now all you need are some Magicos! You could probably pay for them by offering tickets. I'd be happy to contribute to this endeavor!

Don't tease me.  I have heard the Magicos and they sound really good in the store.  I don't know how well they will dance with Naim electronics.   They blew the socks off the Rockports at Goodwin's Hi End in Boston when I heard them.   I wanted to prefer the Rockports but the Magico won in a walk.

My next project is the DR upgrade to the 552 but I am very happy now with the 500DR as it is.   I slipped it into the system without highlighting it and my wife has noticed how right everything sounds.   The Kleos SL gets a lot of the credit but the 500DR kicks it up a notch.

I don't think the ProAc D40R is my last speaker but they are really singing after these recent developments for sure.

Congratulations. They seem to be turning up like policemen and busses this month. Which is no bad thing. Have fun.

Coming up on two weeks with the 500DR.  I slipped it into the system without a fuss or a notice.  It looks just like the 500 after all.  My wife is beginning to bob her head to her favorite music.   I have never seen this before.    I think we have a winner!

How do you manage to slip in something like a 500 without highlighting it? It's a monster, but a very friendly monster.

And how do you hide the trip to the hospital to treat the slipped disc or hernia or both, having attempted to install the thing?

Don't mind me, I am just jealous.

I had a 500 before.   They look identical.   It was a bit of a strain getting it into the car in its double box.  If you are looking for nice, gently used unit, I will put you in touch with my dealer.

I have spent the weekend listening to records.   Neil Diamond "Hot August Night".   Buddy Rich "Plays and Plays".  Early Elvis Costello and the Attractions.    Part of the appeal of the 500DR is how clear and effortless everything sounds.   At low volume there is more resolution and dynamics than ever, and at high volume it comes to life.    Combined with the Herbie's Audio Lab Gliders under my speakers and the Herbie's Grungebuster and Tenderfoot isolation material in my Verdier, this means that I can turn any LP up to 12:00 on the volume knob.  I used to get feedback from the speakers into the Fraim and the beginnings of a boomy sound.   No more.   No more at all.   Now a mundane record sounds live when you turn it up.   And a great record sounds better than ever.    The Naim "they are here" live sound sounds more live than ever.    When I stop the turntable with the needle on the record, there is no ringing at 12:00.   This is a powerful benefit with the effortless 500DR swagger.   You can enjoy it all.   The Herbie's products have transformed the sound at my house.   The 500DR owns the room, but the room opens up with the Herbie's products.
