Naim Uniti Nova

Now that I've got my SuperUniti for about 4 months, I wonder what the Uniti Nova will bring...

Any thoughts?

You mean - apart from a reduced price om the old models?

An HDMI and SD input?  Color screen?  Volume knob on top so you can't stack it?

Seriously, you already have one of the best VFM devices in the Naim portfolio (if not most of hifi).  Just enjoy what you have...

No worries, I won't change quickly unless it makes sense, hence the question...

Here in the UK the Uniti Nova is a little more expensive than the Superuniti.

But it is tempting ...

The HDMI makes the new range the only ones worth having if you have a BluRay player that only has HDMI out for audio (no SPDIF). Some hi-end BRD transports have dedicated audio only HDMI so I guess, that is one area of functionality the Nova brings to the party over the current SU. At the moment, the lack of HDMI on my NDX (for example) is one of the reasons that keeps me from downsizing the AV system back to plain stereo and losing a rack of stuff.

As to what really matters, I think you are going to have to hear it for yourself. However, I would not be feeling so green yet.

People feel like a new product has somehow caused their existing equipment to have magically had a downgrade and be worse now than it was a while ago. While I understand the psychology of this, it is important to remember that a SU today is just as good as it was 3 years ago (well, maybe not if it has been dropped down the stairs).  The best gets incrementally better and while people tell themselves this, the truth gets lost in the grey matter and they (we) are prone to feel like the best stays the same and everything else gets pushed down a notch - which isn't true.

I'd feel pretty happy if I had aspired to a SU and finally got one. Rather than focusing on the Nova, I may be inclined to buy a bunch of music and kick back.

Quite. As my daughter says often "Furst world problem"

I'm afraid that future software updates will be focused only on the new models, would be a shame for those  who have recently invested in a SU.

Do you know that for sure?  I haven't seen Naim mention that officially yet...

While I wouldn't expect support to go on for years, I would expect the SU would be addressed in near-future releases aimed at addressing issues with Tidal streaming.

Yes so would I expect that, not least because there is a big user base out there with SU and anyway there is a lot of commonality with the electronics used in ND* streamers that haven't been replaced by the new Uniti.

if you have a blu ray with an optical or coaxial output I do not understand what improvement can make the HDMI connection that in Uniti Nova is a simple 2 channel ; who tells me what's the real difference between HDMI vs SPDIF/coaxial in the new uniti models? for the rest I am one of the few in the forum who think like you, I prefer the classic line rather than the new Nova or Star that looks like an XBOX One and not an HI END machine ; Instead I appreciate a lot the choice to provide a standby button, personally I would be less worried when I'm away from home while there is a power surge

Next Saturday and Sunday at Milano HI Fidelity 2016 maybe there will be some surprises about the new Uniti? I remember that it was at the Milano Top audio 2012 It was shown for the first time the Unitilite model. Anyway I will be there on saturday

Yes of course. But as I mentioned, some high end players have no SPDIF (no optical or coaxial) output and only offer HDMI.

Take the Denon DBT3313UT for example, it has audio only HDMI and seperate video HDMI. No other digital outputs. It is becomming more common. Hence an HDMI input is really a must these days.  They have AV preamp integration in mind, not stereo hookup hence the focus on HDMI.

The HDMI input on the new range is actually a much better idea than you think. It is an HDMI ARC input, which means that you plug all of your devices into your TV and then run an HDMI cable from the HDMI ARC in/output on the TV (usually HDMI 2) out to the Uniti. So your TV handles the input switching, and will direct all audio through that output.

But the best thing about this being HDMI compliant is that it also allows CEC information to be sent, which means that you can control the Uniti box's volume with your TV remote. I'm also assuming that it can be configured with power on support, which means that switching your TV on also switches the Uniti out of standby and onto the HDMI input.

Uniti Nova will not have any internal storage, right?
