Yesterday I fell in love - with a CD player! Or: CDX2 rocks!

Dear fellow naimees,

for around three years, I was almost exclusively streaming. After upgrading from Uniti to NDS/555, I thought streaming is the top source. Meanwhile, I have also developed my LP12 from "very basic and 20 years old" to EkosSE/Kore/Lingo3 level, and I assumed vinyl was - to me - on par with streaming. I did not listen to a CD for at least 3 years, but a lot to ripped CDs, radio paradise and vinyl.

But I kept missing my CD-collection. I had them stacked away in some old boxes, some 2.000 discs. So last week I bought a used CDX2.1 at a very tempting price to set up with XPS2 power supply I had lying around. Yesterday evening the CDX2 arrived from Holland. I enjoyed very much the task of setting it up, plugging everything in. I was relieved that I had found the necessary Burndy cable in my box of unused cables and picked up a random collectio of my old CDs to see wether that old CDX2 would still work.

And boy - does this machine work! That bass control! That warmth! The first CD I found was a Deutsche Grammophon recording of Bach's Toccata und Fuge. I was stunned! It felt like sitting alone in a huge church, that pipe organ hitting my stomach with force, the air moving in my room. WOW! I left everything which I originally wanted to do whilst listening and just sat down, listening to the whole CD. Then I grabbed another CD... Dvorak's Cello concerto:  the beautiful warmth of the cello. I could not move away from my speakers.

When - after some glasses of red wine - I changed the music style, it became even better. Soko's "I thought I was an alien" album set her singing in the middle of my living room. Then, the Decemberists' "Shanty for the Arethusa" took me aboard an old sailing vessel, while "I was meant for the stage" form their live album  made me sing along loudly. Luckily I was alone ;-) The evening ended more quietly, with Sofie von Otter and Elvis Costello singing "For the stars." Sometimes, nights are too short!

While I really enjoy my NDS, and there's nothing wrong at all with my LP12, that venerable old CD player from Salisbury really made my evening! In comparison, I think there is a little more bass coming from the CDX2 than from the NDX, but that could be my imagination. It might sound weird, but I think that the CDX2 produces a very analogue sound.

Anyway, I just love playing CDs again and am already planning this evening's playlist and the purchase of a neat CD-storage-thingy for my listening room. Neighbours, be prepared: there will be some loud music, some singing and a lot of good mood coming from that little house over there this evening! Putting that CDX2 to work again!

Enjoy your CDX2! Mine is going nowhere. I Love the sound it produces and ive not been tempted to swap it for a Streamer. Next upgrade for me is an XPSDR and then I'll really hear her sing!

Enjoy your new found love!

Great post stereophonie. I've been considering getting a streamer but there's been a few posts recently praising the CDX2. I've not been in the mood for proper listening sessions over the last 6-8 months but your post has pursaded me to get back into it again. I use a 555ps (non-DR) with mine. I'm looking forward to moving house so my next upgrade will be an extra shelve so I can set up two racks. My Muso is absolutely fine for streaming duties.

I will never sell my cd2x.1 always a good SQ with xps, I think it is the best value source considering second hand prices

Great CDP - enjoy the music!

Hi Stereophone - I love my CDX2 (un assisted) too - bought it from new and is my oldest piece of Naim equipment - love its sound - and yes it rocks.  I love my streaming via my NDX/Hugo too -- and ok  that is a more resolving  and intricate performance - but my CDX2 is just pure fun!! I like the way the CDX2 adds a certain warmth to otherwise slightly thin vocals like Bob Dylan and Lou Reed and bounces out the rhythm and timing.... perhaps not totally authentic but sounds nice....

I can't remember if I have had three or four of those (I have one now) – but count me in the club.

To quote an Audio Reviewer, their are only two types of components worth owning, the best, and very close to the best, for a lot lest$$. The Cdx2, most definitely applies to the latter. Allante93!

Cool!

I also love my CDX2. Currently planning some additional racks so it can return to my music room. Nothing wrong with the NDS or LP12, but I miss spinning the CDs.

A CDX2 with an XPS is great. But if you already have an XPS a secondhand CDS3 takes you to another level. 30 seconds of a CDS3 audition and I never looked back. It's worth checking out if you find one for sale.

As Simon says, a new paradigm!

No longer just the Analog TT, The Digital CD, and Digital Streaming, but choice depending on Music and Mood!

And the OP is rocking it, LP 12, NDS, and Naims second tier CDP.

Not Bad.

I want to acquire a CDx2 , but new in the USA they are $8,000. More than a bit beyond my means. I have checked for used, but they only come up once every year and a half or so.

That's about the same price as in Europe (for a new unit).  I took a deep breath last year and bough a new one from my dealer.

I struggled to like my second hand purchased CDX 2.2 but sent it to Naim for a service and it returned sounding like a different machine. Plugged into the Ndac with a serviced 555PS it is capable of some remarkable things.

It is good to hear such coments about one of my previous sources ! That player had for so long time the reputation to be "agressive" - something i could never really understand. Once well installed, it is a great source without any doubt.

Happy listening !

Cheers

Hi Ikoun, yes I remember those aggressive sound comments.. I think on poor support it could sound a bit too forward, and way back before I owned Fraim I supported my CDX2 on Sorbothane and a wooden support to 'tame' it. But when I got a full fat Fraim all that went out of the window and the CDX2 simply sounded wonderful on it... it also benefits from Hiline as well..

Thanks for all your nice comments! Good to hear that you also enjoy spinning these discs...

@christopher_m: actually, this XPS had been feeding my streamer before I got this used 555. I am well trained at buying second hand audio stuff, but not very good at selling things... so, a small collection of upgrade-victims came together.

I started to set up a "second systems" with these parts for the office, but some leftovers had stayed, now put to good use as for the CDP. I am still waiting to find that low-priced olive HiCap to feed my vintage NAC62 into those olive 135s... And for the future, so many DR-options, necessary recaps... I guess I should go and see a doctor to cure me from this audio-illness!
