Powerline Lite

Posted by: Tariqv on 13 October 2016

Hi, I'm about to pull the plug (no pun intended!) on a new Powerline (EU type) but I'm having second thoughts due to the announcement of the Powerline Lite. Is there any info about this new product? Do you think I should wait for it first before taking the plunge?

Thanks

It will be available next year and cost about £100, according to the blurb about the new Unitis. Clearly it's not as good as the existing Powerline. As to whether you should wait in order to get something less good, that's your decision.

Powerline lite £100. Powerline £500.00+ I think your question is answered...

Tariq - with that level of equipment, as per your list, I would not skimp on few PowerLines. You will immediately notice their impact.

Thanks for your responses, ordered it today, hopefully will have a listen as early as tomorrow

Totally agree with everyone. Now, do Naim have a Superlumina Powerline in development???

Yes I think you should wait. Remember 'foreign' powerlines have a different (non-bouncy!) mains plug [furutech last I looked] so they are not that similar. I asked a while back about where the "tech - lite" would appear in the powerline lite but got no reply. If it is 'all' in the mains plug end (not the IEC end) it may be of no benefit to overseas customers.

Not sure what the Powerline Lite is going to be like I found the Powerline to be surprisingly good upgrade for SN2. Very impressed with it.

Not sure but I'd imagine just a lighter version, maybe plastic of some sort?

My guess would have been that 'Lite' was more referring to the performance of the cable but I suppose it could be anything!

Yeah I should imagine that's true also.

So initial impressions, with the PL on the NDX...Had the chance to listen to a few songs yet, songs that I know well. First thing I immediately noticed, lower noise floor. The sound is slightly more focused and notes slam harder (more definition in audio-speak?).

On the negative side the treble has become quite tiresome, any idea why?

Give it a change to burn in, I'm sure it will calm down

Tariq - give it a while to settle down. PowerLine calms the performance of the component it is connected to. If trebble continue to be problematic, have a look at: interconnects and speaker positioning in the room. You may have to adjust your speakers' toe-in angle or move them by few centimeters.

I got my powerline s/h and it still took a day or two to settle so I'd give it some time.

Are they any difference between us/eu/uk powerline performance wise?

Not that I know of.

Actually the key design element is the component-side plug.

As the UK and foreign mains plugs are different (no decoupling tech in the overseas ones) there will be a difference (as the tech that is supposed to 'make the difference' isn't there in the overseas plugs). Whether that difference translates into a performance' differences is in the ears of the beholder.

Thanks for the tip Adam; been listening for several hours, the treble is not as bad as it was before but still not completely settled down. Do you suggest that I increase toe-in or decrease, whats the rule of thumb to decrease the harsh treble effect?
