Speakers again !?
Posted by: al9315 on 16 October 2016
Not changed my speakers for nearly 30yrs and feel my system is easily capable of something better (currently Kans II) - looking for a bit more bass clout and nice musical soundstage - no need to blow the walls off volume wise............
Due to space etc. I have at the moment decided to try to audition the following:-
Neat SX2 / SX1 - Kudos X3 - PMC Twenty5 25 23
The ones which would best fit - would b Neat / Kudos
I wonder if anyone here has any opinions before I contact a dealer........ ?
Thanks
Al

My idea was a floorstander - I assumed better !?!?!?
e.g. PMC Twenty5 21 / 22 models which are both standmount speakers
They are not far short of or equal to the price of some of their (and other manufacturers) floorstanders
Perhaps they are worth consideration? - Would they be satisfactory near the back wall ?
I do not need cavernous bass - just wish a bigger punchier sound than with the Kans, preferably with a smooth treble, as the room seems a little "bright" anyway
I can see me just giving the idea up !
The Shahinian Compass could be just up your street...
gary yeowell posted:Loki, my reply was slightly tongue in cheek. I didn't need to be informed, just people make such a fuss about how low Ob's go, and quite frankly low means nothing without control. That is where Kans show them a clean set of heels along with many others where too much is lost in an effort to play the lowest note on a church organ, which would account for exactly 0% of my listening. Don't get me wrong, i'm a fan of Shahinian in general, although they trade articulacy for extension, at least they are tuneful.
I'm not so sure about that. Maybe it's just that deeper bass requires greater control by the amp and you were mistaking an amplifier problem for a speaker problem....
Japtimscarlet posted:Ahh just found my current stands ... they look like the Linn Akurate 212 stands if you google that
I had mine sprayed silver to colour match my Naim Fraim and if you half fill them (I used sand) they make the perfect base for RK100 speakers at 1/3 the price of original stands
Japtimscarlet posted:Ive been using the Russell K 100,s for nearly 11 months now ...and no regrets at all (had Naim speakers previously) I have also used them on three different types of stands and have found them to NOT be stand sensitive at all!!
By the way, I tried the vinyl covered speakers (demo pair) but bought the piano black ones ...they look stunning and (to my ears) sound (slightly) better than the vinyl ones
I have not tried the RK stands (just too expensive and a bit ugly) but got good results on Focal stands and now have good results on a used pair of Linn stands (sorry not sure which ones but could post a picture)
Interesting japtimscarlet, alway like to hear someone who have lived with a product for a longer time than a demo period . Out of interest what kit are you using with them ,and have you tried different amps ,source with them .Could you post a picture ?. thanks.
Have not different amps ...just my naim Nait xs2 with hicap power
Source is either my LP 12 aro / CD5 XS / Cambridge cnx streamer
I don't feel the source really affects the speaker sound wildly? What struck me first and foremost about the K100,s was how transparent and clear and balanced they are ...I'm sure anyone considering them will read the reviews..and I agree with the review results wholeheartedly
Bass is not enormous..but they are a small stand mount speaker after all!!
I much preferred them to say , PMC 23 speaker's ... there really was no contest IMO .... And my budget would have stretched to another grand ...so they are something of a bargain
Doesn't seem to want to let me upload a pic?

Tried a link to photo bucket .. sorry not a great picture .. only got a cheap camera phone ... spent all my money on Hifi !!
the silver on the stands looks a lot darker than the fraim ..but that's just the crap picture..is a perfect match in normal light

Hey, just bought James Morrison A-Z of Jazz! I've seen the guy many a time, (one advantage of being a local an' all). I am about to VPN so I can get Qubuz. I am happy to pay, (bought the CD), but most overseas sites won't take my money.
And congratulations on the C20's. Food for thought, my second system is running N-Sats and could do with a bit more welly.
Al, I'm delighted it has all worked out so well for you. When I'm able to drive again I shall pop over and have a listen.

Thanks Steve - I would love to go and see him, but don't know if he ever comes to UK ?
His CDs ( I have 5) are tough to get - usually come from Australia and quite expensive + with high postage fee

Thanks HH - and you are welcome any time !
So pleased this worked out well.
I had the pleasure of listening to the system yesterday for a couple of hours and very fine it was sounding too. Those C20's certainly look very well looked after!!!!
I especially enjoyed some of the trumpet tracks that were mentioned. The power of the exceptional Crescendo tweeter really shone though. I don't believe the C20's are particularly bright, if you hear a trumpet played at close range it does sound bright and the Kudos speakers show this up well. If this is bright then I'm Ok with that but harsh they are not which would be an issue.
It's interesting to hear C20's in a different system. I don't have the XPS on my NDX, but have a 282 with Hicap DR vs 82 with Supercap and a 250dr vs 135's which are unserviced.
Al's system sounded a little more refined but not quite as 'ballsy'. I think the bass went deeper with the all black system with a bit more drive but this could be down to the room. I suspect the refinement comes from the XPS. Both systems compare very well with each other and I'd be hard pushed to chose between them.
