BBC4 Pink Floyd 67-72

Posted by: mfan on 21 October 2016

Just seen this on BBC4 - if you like their stuff from this era (I do - a lot) you should enjoy this.  It's repeated later tonight and I think again on Sunday. Presumably the material is from the mega box set about to be released.  Fabulous visual and sound quality, and good mix of psychedelia with a couple of attempts at pop hits.

Yeah, I watched it... really good and a few clips I had not seen before

It was indeed excellent, and made me think about the upcoming box set.

But £375? For material from the archives??

I'm out.

Why not give the material away for free on bandcamp? The hugely priced box sets, many of which are never opened and bought as investments, seem rather cynical, or greedy, or both.

I have it recorded for when I get home.   But £375 for archive & only vinyl (as I understand it) no thanks,  I was lucky enough to have seen a lot of their UK gigs in the early years, & not being a fan of Syd ...........  maybe best left at that.

I watched it. To be honest I thought it was awful but it's a bit before my time as I was born in 1975.

Well I for one welcome our Early Floyd overlords and am busy working out how I can wangle this box set.

At £350 or so this set certainly isn't cheap.

But for fans, it may represent reasonable (if not great) value. After all, there's a lot of stuff here, and the physical packaging looks good.

also, i know someone who has been involved in this project. By all accounts, the Floyd organisation have been going around for the past 29 years, quietly buying up everything they can. Some of this stuff doesn't come cheap - one short cklip allegedly cost £30,000, and other £50,000. Then years of painstaking restoration - this box will have cost an awful lot to put together. If the price is too high, don't buy it (or wait until the price goes down, or until individual volumes are released).

I think £370 is too much, but I want this set really badly (and what was on BBC4 on Friday night only makes me want it more) - and I've had a good year financiually, so it's my early Xmas pressie to myself.

On another note, why the hell should bands - any band, not just the Floyd - give away their work for free? I'm sure you wouldn't want to work for nothing, and nor should anyone - rich or not - be expected to do so either if they don't want to. If an artist's work has artistic value, then surely it is worth paying for.

I guess in this case it's rich middle aged blokes selling to other rich middle aged blokes, and people don't have to pay if they don't want to, so it's probably not an issue.

If we sell our house I might well fall for this. I endorse Kevin's views - it's eye-wateringly expensive, but given that watching that programme has uplifted me, given that early Pink Floyd are embedded in my adolescence (I lost them mostly after WYWH) so much, given that they are one of the best bands ever to grace this planet, and given that you can't take it with you I've just introduced the idea of this for Xmas to my wife. Given that my big sales spiel started with a) it's 27 discs and b) it's horribly expensive, her first guess of £1,000 was encouraging...

My next ploy is that it's not even the cost of a metre of Chord Music

I understand the box set package is over 12 hours of audio & even more hours video,  so maybe £370 is not so bad.   But my old Rega is about to go on the market,  so .....  I'm out ..... (but hoping for a digi only package some time)

It's interesting the the 2CD set is 1967-1972, where as the large boxset is 1965-1972

Mike, most of it is CD / DVD / Blu-ray with only a few 7" singles, so your Rega isn't essential.

I didn't think £299 for the Beatles Mono LP box was overpriced. Fab sound, superb pressings, perfect covers and inserts, great book - what's not to like?

£375 is a new record in the box set space and whilst I really want it I simply can't allow myself to encourage record companies to start believing £375 for a box set is acceptable.

In reality I would listen to the music but I don't believe I will watch the footage on DVD that many times to justify the cost....

On a positive note the current reissue campaign on vinyl is priced very sensibly and has been done well. I guess they could have easily charged c£40 a go but they didn't.

Oh no, I am starting to justify the cost of the box set by offsetting the cost of what they could have charged on the vinyl reissue campaign.....

As a Floyd fan I am happy we have both the box set and the vinyl reissue campaign to ponder over.

Started to watch I thought Astro Dominie was pretty dreadful, not before my time. Not a fan of the first couple of albums.

Guess what I won't be buying maybe a £3.75 though.

Watch out for Radio 1 DJ and paedophile Chris Denning about a quarter of the way in. Well done BBC!
