Superuniti running temperature

Posted by: TonyR on 23 October 2016

Hi,

What temperature does your SU run at? The reason that I ask is mine runs at 55c in the shelf/enclosure that is it's home. This has between 1 & 3" air gap around it.

However, in  open space it runs about 8c lower.
Am I running it too hot?

Thx,
Tony

The SU does run very warm, but 55c sounds too much. I kept mine on the top shelf of the stand to help it keep cool, and it ran at about 40c from memory. I would try to give it more space. Whether or not it affects its longevity I don't know.

I just checked mine which sits on a table and has been playing all day although not that loud and it's 39 deg C.

if you have been playing it at reasonably high levels before checking then 55 deg C doesn't strike me as a problem, but I would be concerned if it weren't quite a bit lower first thing in the morning.

best

Around 38-39 C - middle section above the logo.

Last time I checked (a long time ago) it said low 40s so I think you need more free air around it.

Currently 40 C - been playing on and off all day. Max vol around 45, currently vol at 36.  Sits on top of a solid shelf with nothing above it.

55 sounds too hot to me. Mine always ran below 40. What exactly is the 'shelf/enclosure' it sits in? Is it open at the back, as proper equipment racks generally are, thus allowing ventilation?

Also, are there other heat producing (electronic) devices near it, especially underneath?

What type and length of speaker cable are you using?

What is the air temperature in the room?

Thx, I've decided to change my layout. My SU will run at 42 outside of any enclosures. While it's 'ideal' location is at 55c and it's been there for a while I'm not will to risk shortening it's life anymore.

Thx for the feedback,
Tony

I had a SuperUniti inside a very small enclosure for two years without a problem. Felt like an oven in there, but ran like a champ!

Before we renovated our house to a comfortable level of thermal efficiency we would regularly achieve household temperatures greater than 30 degrees. The hottest was 37 inside while 43 outside.

the superuniti did overheat twice on such summer days despite having plenty of clear air on a table. I believe it shut down at around 60 degrees. It may have had something to with my whole of house and garden Hi-Fi strategy being to turn up the volume.

If I didn't live in condo I'd like to try your strategy as well to see if mine shut down at 60 degrees, purely in the name of science of course. However, I think my neighbours might start shutting down much sooner than the SU, unfortunately.

Double glazing, insulation and dedicated outdoor speakers mean I haven't overheated for a couple of years.

i am lucky to have a big enough block and great neighbours.

I have the SU in a open-front-self close to the floor. The distance to the side pannels is about 1.5 inch and 3 to the top. The back of the self is closed and I pass all cables through drilled holes.

With a room temperature of 22 ºC the SU internal read temp is 44 ºC. This measure was made after an hour playing online music but with the volume set to zero as I used it with a Chord mojo for powering my headphones.

Hope this help... Javi

Hola Javi,  re equipment temperature in semi-closed locations:   My NDX top case temperature runs aprx 10'C to 12'C warmer than ambient temperature in its rack position - see my profile,  the shelf has 50% area open at the rear & its 14mm space on the top -  I have been experimenting & for a time had it standing on an open support (table) & found it ran only 2'C to 4'C warmer than ambient.  I don't know the SU,  but my point is that a closed location does raise the case temperature quite a lot.

Mike,

I completely agree with you, and in fact I will move the SU to a wider/more ventilated location. But I put my measurements to "confirm" that Tony-R's temperature is strangely high. Apart from that I guess that SU will reach a higher temperature as it has also a power amp circuits.

FYI, I did move my SU to a better ventilated area and it runs between 42 & 45. Ambient temperature is probably ~ 22

That sounds much better.
