Second XPS-DR on the NDS

Posted by: MangoMonkey on 29 October 2016

Tried the XPS-DR on the NDS powering it's digital section (1) with the 555-DR powering just the analog section (2). First time that I've really been impressed with this system - Sound is more open, layered etc.

The XPS-DR on the NDS/555-DR 553/300 was much bigger improvement than on the 272/250DR so it's staying on this system.

I didn't think PSUs could be mixed in this way. In other words if you've got a 555PSDR powering your NDS and you want another PSU it has to be another 555PSDR. I may be mistaken though.

Good to know indeed. Question may be then whether to add XP5 XS on NDS/555DR and climb the PSU ladder on the digital side. Is NDS/XP5/555DR better than NDS/555DR?

Actually... Naim does not recommend it, even though it's written in the user manual (see the Note below).

Naim's reason for this is: It’s not recommended because we feel that the digital PSU in the 555PS even when used to supply both feeds simultaneously is at least equal to the digital PSU in the XPS and so it may not be a real-world upgrade…

Note:
It is possible to power the NDS using a multiple power
supply arrangement comprising two 555PS units, or a 555PS
and one other compatible power supply.

This indeed makes a lot of sense.
