Speakers with Naim Nait xs

Posted by: Marcusb on 30 October 2016

Hi,

just bought a used Nait xs and I'm now looking for some speakers to use with it. I'm very interrested in Audiovector QR1, anyone who tried these speakers? Would also like to know if anyone tried the Duevel Planets speakers? I do mostly listen to rock and heavy metal.

Marcus,

i have no knowledge of the speakers you mention but an idea of budget would help.

Great amp by the way.

Regards,

Lindsay

Select speakers according to your own tastes and the necessities of the room rather than other people's taste.

Go and listen to them - there's no other way to select speakers.

Thanks guys!

My budget would be around 1100-1500 GBP.

Plenty of speakers to choose here. If you have a larger room the Tannoy XT8F could fit, has larger drivers (8 inch) that will make rock and heavy metal more meaty.

The Audiovector looks classy and with a ribbon tweeter and has good reviews. Worth a listen.   You could try going into any second hand Hi-Fi dealer and have a listen to what they recommend with Naim XS.

2nd hand will get you more groove for your £s.

As said depending on room but Neat, Dynaudio, Kudos are amongst the usual suspects.

Take care with Dynaudios, some models can be a very difficult load (and even though I don't know of any Dynaudios that are an easy load, the XS is still a fairly capable amp that can handle moderately difficult loads).

For this reason, with Dynaudios it's particularly important to hear them with your amp and in your room, (although this advice is still pertinent to all speakers irrespective of the load they present to the amp).

PMC 20.21's + Nait XS make for a pretty thrilling combination ime.

All too true they also like room rear and side.

However,  a friend of mine drove his Focus 140s with his XS - sumptuous!!!

I ran Duevel Planets for a year with a Unitiqute2/NAP100. They are well worth an audition, as they do vocal and midrange realism like few other speakers of their size and price. They can also fill a surprisingly large space quite nicely. The best part is how the soundstage moves with you outside of the sweetspot, giving you good stereo imaging around the room rather than in one narrow spot. Mine fired across a 4m x 7m x 2.7m area of my L-shaped room and worked well with a big rug over the marble floor in front and some plants tucked behind them. I also listen to rock and blues - I'm thinking of going back to Duevels but it would be the Enterprise or Venus for my space for the added capability in dynamics & scale.

Cons would be that being relatively inefficient, Planets are best up to moderate volumes so if you like your rock and metal loud you will find their limits quickly. Also the fact that they radiate the mids/highs all around means you need to be careful if your room is quite bright sounding.

If you're looking at used pairs, make sure they are mk3 from 2012 or later. These are a kilo or two heavier due to better internal bracing. The earlier versions sounded boomy and boxy with muddied bass, but the last version fixed this issue (I've had both in my room and the difference was major).

Marcusb,

A description of your room and any speaker placement constraints would be helpful. If you've got a solid wall to place the speakers close to and are willing to buy used, a pair of late model Credos can rock with the Nait XS. Tight, tuneful bass and gobs of PRaT.

As you're interested in the Planets and live in Sweden, have you given consideration to Larsen speakers? Maybe out of budget?
