nac 112x nap150x ' would a flatcap xs be too much
Posted by: Garry on 01 November 2016
Hi would a flatcap xs be too much of an upgrade for the nac112x ' I know people say it will work with the nac 122x etc any comments appreciated
It will be fine. That said, I'd suggest you'd be better off swapping the 112x for a 122x and getting a used Flatcap 2x. That option should be cheaper too.
I'd probably just go for a Flatcap 2X, and save yourself a couple of hundred. Actually with that money you could likey px your 112 for a 122X and have a double upgrade.
Jeez Nigel, in the time it took me to type that, you already wrote the same thing!!!
You've got to be quicker. And I was using the phone too. But the most important thing is that we agree.
Yes i was using the phone too, but from Italy..... guess it takes longer for the message to get to the UK....
Have to agree with HH and Gary.
When I first dipped my toe in Naim waters, it was with second hand 112 / 150 / Flatcap 2.
The first upgrade was a move to a 122, again, second hand, and was a substantial lift over the 112.
I've lost track of the relative second hand values of these pieces of kit, but, as these chaps have suggested, it would seem to represent a good vfm upgrade.
Thanks for all the replies ' think a 2x and upgrade 0n the 112x and then to 122x next move. See if any trade ins are available for the 112x..
202 did not win you over?
AVOID the flatcap xs. It has a different sonic signature and won't flatter the 112. I used to use one for the 122 and it wasn't a good fit - more detail, but brighter and leaner. Get the Flatcap 2x - designed with the 112 and 122 in mind. .
Garry posted on another thread that he'd home demmed a NAC202 and was keeping it.

I saw that too - but this thread is very recent. Perhaps cost is an issue.
I took it that the 202 was going to be powered from his 150x.

yes I was keeping the 202 Christopher ' and have not got rid yet..But am interested in the 122x and Flatcap as I like the darker sound that it produces..I am putting two systems together..Flatcap 2x comes today..I will try the 202 on the flatcap and do some comparisons..
not cost issue Hastings ..Just putting two systems together..
How and why is the Flatcap xs different to the Flatcap 2x Hastings..Would a flatcap xs be an issue for the nac 202..?? Anyway will have a listen to the 202 and the 112x on the flatcap..
A few forum people seem to rate the NAC152XS very highly......

The 202 is a relatively old design .??..Just wondering if the Flatcap XS would be a negative upgrade...Am however listening to the 112x / 202 today both rigged up to the flatcap 2x ' as it is delivered today..( cant wait).
See how much difference it makes to each..I believe the 202 has alps volume and balance...Good quality ' the 112x just a standard potentiometer/ logrithmic control resistor ladder...As the volume control sits between the pre and power amplifier it will affect quality of sound...I cant wait to hear what the flatcap does to the 112x as I do like the rather black contrast in the sound. I prefered it at the beginning to an old chrome bumper 42.5 that was a little unruly going into the nap150x..
The 202 sounds great running on the 150x power supply so am expecting it to sound amazing with the flatcap..??
Flatcap 2x warming up on the nac 112x ' immediately ' Rythms just wanna make you dance ' the PRAT has taken off ' smoother sound ' much more dynamic ' tighter Bass and larger soundstage..Still retains that Black contrast... Very similar to the nac 202 without any psu help..
nac 202 on the flatcap 2x is just lush...It beats the 112x by a large margin on the LP12 ' not so much on digital source..Slightly less grainy but soundstage is lovely... The nac 202 is definately better with vinyl...Now back to enjoying the music.

Yes better with lp 12 soundstaging lovely and lush as said in last post ' but having listened to the na112x and the 202 hooked up to the flatcap 2x for a day or so now ' The improvement to the 112x was dramatic digitally..smoother and less grainy ' just generally bigger lot more focus..There are things I like better in some ways than with the 202 even though it will go in my main system later on..
Think the 202 is going to be happier with a bigger amp ' maybe a nap200..Think the 202 is a bit much for the 150x even though it does sound lush with vinyl ' the nap 200 may allow the nac 202 to relax a little more..Think the 150x ' 112x and fc2x are a good match..Guess the 122x would be perfect match for 150x.
Playing around with a few bits of kit as is the nature of our hobby /obsession ha ha.. it can be picked up so cheaply and resale is no problem,,
Cheers, Garry! All part of the fun; I agree.
