Quick question: nap 140 with 272

Posted by: Owen Davies on 01 November 2016

My 250.2 is off to be dr'ed this weekend.  A friend has offered me an old Nap 140 to pair with my 272 whilst it is away.  It's obviously from a previous generation and I'm not expecting great results but I guess it should work, unless due to ignorance there is a compatibility issue I'm not aware of?

I'm not familiar with those Dynaudios but, so long as they don't present too difficult a load the NAP140 should work just fine.  Just make sure your friend also includes the SNAIC4 to connect it to your NAC-N272.

Excellent speakers by the way, the 140 should work OK, they may need a little more power to show their best, but I think the 140 will be fine while the 250-2 is away getting upgraded.

Many thanks both

Just an update, disconnected the 250.2, set up the 140 and you know what, it sounds fantastic!  Maybe I should have gone backwards instead of forwards when I got into Naim!

Welcome to the old-school world of Naim. F"&kin' good innit

Never under estimate the older Naim stuff. Some of us actually prefer it to the current stuff............

Sacrilege!!!

Oh, hang on, I've got one of those NAP140 amps too.

Good, aren't they?

Happy listening, FT

How is it different?

And try not to confuse us with things like "timing" and "inky darkness"

Still listening to it, playing some familiar stuff.  I'll keep it simple.  Way better bass response, was listening to the Stones mono remasters on Tidal and Bill's bass comes alive.  It's certainly powerful enough to drive me Dynaudio X38's.  Soundstage is different probably not as wide but I'm not complaining.  It's very, very musical.  Trying some jazz now and again the sound is very alive.  Actually I'm loving it!

Someone better convince me that a DR'd 250 is the way to go, I think I prefer the sound of the 140 over the 250.2!

I can convince you ..... in the opposite direction..........

The 140 is a fun amp. It's more fleet of foot than the 250 and so may be a better match to your speakers and room. I'm sure you'll enjoy the 250 when it's DR'd and back in your system. If not, flog it and get a nice serviced 140

140? Yep, that's my CB spare; not as good as my CB250s but good amp.

I was once asked what DR brings to the 250.2 and I replied that it brings all the music back.

So, while the 250.2 has never floated my boat, the 250DR is a much, much more musically engaging amplifier, close to the performance of a pair of NAP135s.  This makes the 250DR a far, far more capable amplifier than the NAP140.

You will almost certainly be over the moon with it when you get it back and have run it in.

Keep the faith and you will be rewarded.

Best regards, FT

Thanks all!  Will let you know what I think in a few weeks time when I get the 250 DR.  In the meantime I have bought the 140 from my friend for a silly price (very generous of him).  I was thinking of buying a second system and this experience has made it clear that it would be fun to do it differently - old school all the way!

In your second system, Owen, try to match the 140 with a nice NAC72 and Hi-Cap. Luvly jubly !

Yep job done, then  Owen will probably sell the 272/250 and keep the 72/HiCap/140 combo

Unfortunately the NAC72 isn't so good at streaming...

Last year I moved from 72/140 to 272/250 and there were a few fleeting moments when I did miss the old Olives. The sound of the oldies but goodies is somehow warmer and had a wonderful pace to it. However, now I simply could not imagine going back. What at first sounded a little clinical a little too cool i now love as precision, each instrument so much easier to follow and as the new amps have settled in simply an amazing overall delivery.

now saving for that new PS.

He may take the vinyl route

Joking aside it's good to hear the 140 doing a grand job on the end of the 272, the shoebox power amps have always been my favourite especially the 110. Currently running a NAP100 which imho is a close second to the 110.
