In appreciation of convenience

Posted by: dayjay on 02 November 2016

For the last three ish weeks I have been without my little Hugo and, thanks to Doug Brady Hifi, was very relieved to receive it back yesterday all working and fixed under warranty.  I have been surprised how its absence, and the absence of digital music therefore, has impacted on the amount of music listening and associated pleasure I have been having during those three weeks.  Despite the fact that I have a pretty decent vinyl set up and a Nat05xs I would guess that the amount of time I spent listening dropped by two thirds, and listening to new music, in the absence of the excellent Audirvana/Tidal option, dropped to virtually nothing.  This has nothing to do with sound quality, in my view the quality of my RP8 and Hugo playback is pretty comparable with the quality of recording being the deciding factor more often than not, but more to do with convenience and ease of use.  I have delved into my vinyl collection and played some old favourites and I've listened to more radio but what I have found is that my late night listening, which is when I have most time to do so, dropped right off.  Now this could be because I'm a lazy so and so but I think it's more to do with how quick and easy it is to pick up the IPad, find a good album and have it running, and sounding lovely, very very quickly.  I still love playing records on the Rega but it is something I do as a treat, when I have a Sunday to myself and can indulge in the ritual of playing the vinyl and not something I want to do at the end of a long day, at 10:30pm before bed so much.

I don't really care what source I use as long as it sounds good and I love all three of mine bug I've seen many disdainful references to convenience in the many digital vs vinyl discussions on forums that I have read but for me it would seem that convenience translates to length of time spent listening and musical pleasure.  So I thought I would express my appreciation of convenience whist my lovely Hugo plays Bad Company in the background.  It's lovely to have both back!

David, I know you posted this in the Padded Cell, and at first I felt I would leave it there to see where it went, but now it looks like the Hifi Corner would be the most appropriate room, so that's where I moved it.

You've swapped it with the boxes thread!

As for my take on convenience, there's nothing quite like threading up a reel of tape to get you in the mood for listening to the music contained therein...

Not something I've ever owned or considered owning although they are a lovely looking piece of kit.  Had friends many years ago who swore by them.  I have, however, always lusted after a Nakamichi Dragon and even now I get the odd temptation,

Hmack, I don't do the tape project, although on a visit to Focal a few years back I was delighted to see some of their tapes on the desk of one of the directors who is an avid R2R fan. However, I am lucky enough to have around 200 or so pre recorded reels from the '60s and '70s, mostly from the USA where 4 track tape at 7 1/2 ips was as good as it got for many years.  I still buy them when I can. Last one recently - tosca on RCA living stereo.

One of the reasons I still keep the 4000DS is that most tapes were originally released as 3 3/4 IPS, not the best SQ I agree. The B77  7/1/2 - 15 is mostly used for recording these days. Those original recordings or re-releases  at 7 1/2 speed do not come cheap.

Dayjay, I just saw this thread. I own the Chord Qbd76 and may be able to relate to your experience with the Hugo. The Chord is a very analogue and musical sounding source. I have been listening to a lot of music since its inclusion into the system.

It is certainly a contentious thing with regards to the convenience of digital versus analogue. It is a personal thing. I have sold my turntable rig several years ago as I wasn't spending much time on it in comparison to my digital setup, and for the fact that i frequently damage the stylus of the cartridges due to my carelessness.

Tony, yes the difference in sound quality between 3 3/4 and 7 1/2 IPS is enormous.

Which makes cassette and the results that Nakamichi achieved all the more remarkable.

I spend a lot of time using an IPad, Dragonfly Dac and B&W headphones and for what it is worth I really do enjoy both convenience and SQ. For me, if it gets you putting on some music that you enjoy then great news.

I think you're missing the point here, Slim. I do streaming with Tidal, and CD rip replay all the time and I can understand it is really convenient   But there are times when I feel like listening to my music a little "closer"  and only vinyl or other analogues sources give me that felling.

Tony, maybe I am missing the point. But here I am listening to some Music on my iPad! I used to have a TT years ago and still have every LP I have purchased. For me I always have enjoyed CD replay and streaming has only added to my enjoyment.

Apologies if I came across I bit abrupt, Slim . It was not my intention. Although we may enjoy different formats, music comes first.

Enjoy it!

No problem. 100% with you on that Tony, music first.

I spent a decade without decent sound, and sadly let go my vinyl collection. A couple of years ago I walked into my local Naim dealer and plonked down for a 172/200 and Ovator 400s. I had heard the 800s with Statement roadshow and was impressed with streaming.

Two years on I am still happy with my sound. And streaming is all I do. I have friends with serious vinyl kit, and appreciate that with a great analogue recording/pressing/turntable there is magic. But I believe that with a good modern recording that was always in the digital realm, a 24/96 or beyond file with a high end streamer is the sonically the go. Source is most important,  and the start is your music vinyl or HD file. A modern lp is pressed off a HD file. Often mastered specifically for the analogue pressing. Studio d/a is not necessarily as good as what a NDX can achieve.

I have access to a couple of actual studio files of some bands that I have seen live many a time. I also listen to live music 2 -3 times a week, often unamplied, mostly jazz. Have had a fantastic opera soprano singing at my dinner table 1 metre away, (Puccini and I died and went to heaven). Lived with a decent classical pianist for fourty years. We had a Bechstein piano. Made my active Isobariks sound very sad.

A modern well engineered and recorded album gets me closest to that live experience. And they're all digital. Yes these albums are few and far between. But they show just what is possible.

Addendum! The recording that takes me closest to "truth", (admittedly mine and open to debate), is "Meet Me In London" on Naim Label. 24/192 file. Kills anything I can remember hearing. "Radio Silence" is pretty good too. And both more convenient than my days with the LP12/Ekos/Troika.

David, I'd add cartridge anxiety to your well put account of the foibles of listening to Vinyl. Having endured the horror and pain of having my Linn Karma completely totalled by a friend's toddler a while ago, I was never quite the same again!

I certainly hope you chose a humane means of eliminating the little tyke...

I'm with you on the convenience thing David. In comparison from before I got digital streaming I probably listen to at least twice the amount of music nowadays. Being recently saddled with arthritis and needing a couple of joint replacements, if I only had CD & vinyl I probably wouldn't listen to the hi-fi at all for long periods. I do enjoy a good vinyl session every now & then (got rid of CD replay when my streaming setup bettered it) but the great pleasure I get from being able to sit here and scroll through my music collection so easily, playing what takes my fancy, really cannot be beaten.

Much the same here also listen to a wider variety of music as well. purchasing more music than ever before.
