Power Supply

Nobody has ever done this, because one can't. The 272 can be powered with a XP5XS, and XPS, or a 555PS, as the manual explains. 

Thank you for that. So same question on the above units. I was thinking of getting the XPS DR however it is NAIM expensive, is it worth getting the XPS XS for now from Ebay or waiting 12 months til my busting job picks up on the market and get the XPS DR?

The XPSDR is the 272's natural partner and that's what I'd get. I'd also set the idea of eBay aside and look at Naim dealers, who often have trade ins or exdem examples. 

If it was me, I'd hold on and wait for the XPSDR - some are avaliable ex-dem so you don't have to go for a new one either. I would have thought that the 272 was pretty good in it's own right.

Why shouldn't the XPSXS work well with the 272?

Hi The Strat. I am assuming you mean why wouldn't the XP5XS work? If so I can confirm it does. I had an ND5XS with the XP5 and when I moved to the 272 I tried it naked and with the XP5. There was a definite improvement in bass definition and in vocal timbre using the PSU.

i haven't auditioned the XPS so can't comment on how much better it might be.

I agree that you have to be really, really, careful with eBay but I bought a one year old XPS DR on eBay a couple of months back and saved myself £1000 compared with a new one. (Mind you, bearing in mind another thread recently relegated to the Padded Cell, it didn't come with its box!).

I'm not sure if it's going to sound as good with it not coming in a box? 

When I first home auditioned a 272/250dr combo,my dealer happened to have an xp5 xs "laying around" his store,and let me take it home too.I hooked it up,knowing full well I would not keep it,I wanted an xps dr,as recommended here.I would say the improvement,if any,was very small over the bare 272... I would not bother with this power supply,there is no dr tech in this one,only the xps dr and 555  dr is what I am looking at.The bare 272 is pretty awesome on it's own,if you ask me...keep saving.

Sounds like I should audition the XPSDR at some point - although following normal Naim philosophy the ND5 does disable the 272's own transformer and should reduce electrical noise in that box. I DID hear improvements when I did an A/B comparison.  

As always with upgrading you pays your money......

Do XPS2 fuses still implode on switch off/on, or did they fix that problem?

Glad to say that mine never did and the same was true when it was upgraded to DR specification. I traded for a 555DR back in the summer and that too is fine -  fuse-wise at least.....

eBay can be a risk ... but there are also a lot of dealers who now use eBay for ex-dem and second hand equipment.

Worth a look ... but as you would buying a car be careful you know who you are buying from.

Or try a certain dealer in St Albans - known for all sorts of pre-loved Naim  boxes. You certainly know what you're getting there. I'm not the dealer btw,  just a very satisfied customer

Ravenswood10 Did you notice a big improvement going from the xps to the 555?I am about to pull the trigger on an xps dr for my 272/250dr,but after hearing a few comments here,I am also considering waiting until I can afford the 555dr,any info would be appreciated 

I certainly did on my NDS but can't speak for the 272. I had my XPS DRd earlier this year then a certain dealer from St Albans who sold me the NDS offered me a deal against a 555DR which I couldn't refuse and the rest is history as they say. . I've not heard for myself but other forum members do talk in terms of a natural synergy between the 272 and the XPS DR.

Thanks for the reply,I realize we are talking two different products,but the big jump you got seems to mirror what a few people said they had using the 272/xps and switching to the 555,interesting for sure...I guess I will have to go for a road trip to hear first hand.

Earlier this week my 2nd hand 555PS (with DR upgrade) arrived. This cost me less than a new XPS DR. I'm delighted with it. There's a lot more detail and a deeper soundstage compared with my 272 alone.

Due to where I live, it wasn't possible to compare the XPS DR with the 555PS DR, so I just took a punt on the 555PS when I saw one on ebay.

I have a question about the 555dr power supply...I noticed it has 2 outputs at the back,if I were to use one with my N272 which only needs one feed,would the other output still be able to feed a cdx2,for example(which I do not have at the moment) or can it only supply power to one box.Basically I am wondering if I would be wasting half the power supply,or does it all get used when powering the 272?

No, that won't work. One supply is digital only, for use with the CD555 or NDS where the digital and analog supplies are split.

Thanks Richard,I realized that after I did more reading on the official Naim site,so I would be using ALL of the 555 with the 272,it just all goes through the one input in this case,correct?
