Taming down Mu-So Qb bass?

Posted by: Jarl on 12 November 2016

Hi all, any suggestions how to tame down Mu-So Qb bass volume? At slightly more enthusiastic volume the bass gets quite overbearing - both in the close-to-wall and away-from-wall setting. Moving around the box doesn't solve the issue either. The problem is more prominent with lower quality streams (Spotify Connect using premium service) than with uncompressed FLAC files.

Have you turned off the loudness? What is it sitting on - something like a flimsy cupboard will accentuate the bass. We have ours on a granite worktop that weighs a ton and it sounds really good, even six inches from the wall in a corner.

+1 for checking that the loudness is turned off.
I have the loudness turned off and my unit is several inches away from the wall and away from any corners and it sounds terrific.

And +1 from me for what HH and Blythe say.

A way to check how it sounds is to choose a studio feed of a male voice on Radio 4 HD. It should sound like a person and not a HiFi.

Thanks for the replies. With "loudness", do you mean the setting "close to wall" or "away from wall"?

It does seem like moving around and changing the direction the sound can be improved substantially.

The main thing remaining is that less-than-CD-quality streams are still more bass-heavy than quality sound.

There is another setting called Loudness and you should set that to off as well as setting the wall proximity to "close to wall".

I remembered to look at the Naim app when I was at home and could see my Qb on the rooms screen. The loudness setting is in the menu that appears when you press the gear wheel icon in the top right corner of the screen. It's in the top level menu as a button, so you want that not to be highlighted.

I found it as well. I am using the app in the Dutch language and the word used in the app "Geluidssterkte" actually means "Volume" and not "Loudness". So I assumed this was the setting you need to show the volume bar. The Qb now sounds as I was hoping it would. Thanks for the help!

Excellent! If you want to show the volume bar then that is another setting down one level from the top level where loudness is. I think it's called "show volume bar" but I'm not at home now to check.
