Speakers

Posted by: Parlow on 16 November 2016

I'm looking to upgrade my speakers for my Uniti2 (with a budget of about £2000 for small floor speakers or stand mounted) and there's one thing that is driving me absolutely nuts.  Speakers are ugly.  While I get that form should follow function and I don't want to compromise, too much, just for looks there's just not a whole lot of choice. Kef seem to be trying with the LS50s to marry modern looks and good sound, albeit at a lower price point, but other manufactures seem stuck in 70s with stripy veneers or black.

Yeah I remember the Russel K room at the show. All sounded very good.

As I recall they were partnered with the TQ cables, which worked extremely well...

Yes. Full TQ loom with Silver diamond speaker cables costing more than the RK 150 speakers!  Did all sound very good though!

Yes he was. I didn't realise and tried to quiz him on the TQ cables!

How about these beauties?

Subtle? Tick
Tasteful? Tick
Unboxlike? Tick

Perfect, search over.  Do they come in candyfloss pink as well?

They'd look great on my bedroom dresser.  Do they come in green?

On speaker appearance, you can close your eyes when listening to music, but closing your ears to look at pretty speakers simply defeats the purpose of hifi.

There is something intoxicating about horns (!!?!), but the size of mouth to do proper bass makes them impractical in a home unless you build them in (anyone remember the concrete horn designs of the 1960s? If ever I am lucky enough to be able to have a house built to my specification (i.e. A major lottery win), it would be very tempting to build full  range horns opening into my purpose-designed listening room...

I am sure they can speak for themselves !?

I think if those were mine I'd keep the grilles on! And the lights off!

I try not to comment on the look of speakers too much as people can get upset - for example the  Focal Sopras look awful in black or wood to me, but strangely ok in white or orange - but others love the shiny curvy modern look. I had some PMC twenty.23s in oak which I think are a pretty speaker, albeit conservative. Most people are averse to the look of my current speakers but I think they are nice.

Common, sopras look bad in wood/black and "ok" in orange/white!! You got a very funky side for a middle aged white men i am classic, black or wood !

Dynaudio focus 160's are within your budget and are very nicely finished,I used to own a pair in walnut, excellent speaker for the money.

I got to hear the ProAc D20r speakers today.  In black ash they looked reasonable, not great but reasonable.  However, I didn't get on with the sound. A bit too clinical and that ribbon tweeter sounded quite jarring on one of my audition tracks (The Libertines, Can't stand me Now).  Next week I'm auditioning the Focal Electra 1008be so onwards and upwards.

Parlow, did you dem them with your uniti2?

Posted on: 18 November 2016 by Parlow

They were set up with NAC-N 272 and NAP 250 (which is what I want to have eventually).  For next weeks audition of Focal it will be with a U2. Then U2 with NAP 250.

thanks for the info.

Well, I can think of some speakers that work rather well with the 272/250 and they cost a lot less than a new pair of D20rs. Whether they pass the Parlow ugly stick test is another matter of course.

Also looking at the picture I wonder how do you hide you speaker cables? I am impressed

Posted on: 19 November 2016 by Huge

Wireless SL2s?

Deep pile carpet hiding any bulge round the fireplace (look at the castors on the chair)?

(Also look between the fireplace and the RH speaker - I see cable!)

Posted on: 19 November 2016 by hungryhalibut

My intention of posting the picture was simply to give Parlow an idea of a speaker that works well with the 272/250. I was also interested in seeing if they they are considered ugly, as this is clearly important, and if they are there is no point suggesting similar types of design. I don't want to divert the thread further; as to where the speaker wires are, they run in a plastic conduit beneath the marble fireplace.
