Playing apple music on Superuniti, Please advice

Posted by: Frits Van Der Veer on 18 November 2016

Hi all,

I have 1 TB music (flac/dsd etc) on a hard drive playing via jRiver on my Superunity (using DLNA). I use Tidal and Spotify as well on the superunity (the first for myself mainly and spotify my girlfriend likes) for the music i do not own.

Now i am thinking to save money by going to apple-music (already using matchmusic for syncing with my iphone/ipad). Apple music combines the best of both world for me. I can play  "cd" quality music from apple-music (for music i do not own) vs spotify 320 kbps plus tidal CD quality at a cost respectively of 10 euro/month vs 30 euro/m,

Unfortunately for the superunity applemusic is not really plug and play yet (as tidal and spotify are).

Could one of you advice how to make apple-music playable on the superunity in a user friendly fashion?

greeting

Frits

If you're talking about the Apple Music streaming service, it's not CD quality, it's AAC, more or less the same quality as Spotify. An easy way to make it work on a Naim streamer is to get an Airport Express, connect it to the streamer with an optical digital cable, and use Airplay to connect from an iOS device.

Hi Frits,

There's plenty on the internet about relative quality of Apple Music vs Spotify, but it's definitely not CD quality.

I think I've asked you this before, but how do you use JRiver with DLNA, do you use it as a server with the Naim app?

Apple Music doesn't stream at anywhere near CD quality.  In comparison to Tidal it's really quite poor.  Another couple of ways to get it ontdo your SU is either Bluetooth from an iPad / iPhone or connect an Apple TV to the SU via the TV.  To be honest I was an early adopter of Apple Music, but I cancelled due to poor quality music (if they can stream 1080p TV then why not music at CD quality) and the interface drove me crazy.

Hi Frits,

I would get rid of Spotify if I were you, then you could  save something like 10 euros per month.

HI all

Thanks!
AM: I know am is not full CD hence the "cd" . Even tidal and Spotify dwell me with 96kbps songs on a regular basis (but that's another discussion). I just want to check out music and have my girlfriend able to use it easily. Tidal is no very user friendly and also spotify underwhelms me.
Airport express: I have an older ATV2 which i can use. That is my fall back option. I am hoping for a more P&P option.

Chris: jRiver; I use it as UPNP software (like Plex, itunes). It is on a mac and the music is on a drive on the network.
I use jRemote as remote (naim app is also usable, but prefer aesthetically jRemote).

Thanks Frits, I use JRiver in much the same way except that I haven't got my music drive on the network yet.  The only real problem I've found with JRemote is when playing very short (less that 20 seconds) tracks, so tend to use it and the Naim app depending on what I'm listening to.
