Trying to understand flashing source "mute" button on NAC282

Posted by: Graeme MacArthur on 18 November 2016

I only use one source input on my NAC282 - "Tuner" to connect my ND5XS. I also have my Headline 2 plugged into the "Tuner" output socket. Normally I have the "Tuner" output for the headphones muted. The pre-amp is only one month old.

When I want to listen through the headphones I take the "Tuner" output out of mute. Sometimes this causes the tuner source mute button to flash. The manual says that this indicates a power supply or link plug fault. The first time it happened I remade all the connections and it seemed to have cured the issue. Today it happened again. If I press the source mute button while it's happening the source does mute, but keeps flashing. I think it stops by itself after a while. I say "think" because I press mute on the IR handset and amplifier front in an attempt to get it to stop and perhaps it's something to do with this.

I read in these forums that it may just indicate that the pre-amplifier is stabilising, although I can't find anything to suggest this in the manual.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me please?

I had this happen once on my 52 preamp after I tried powering it with two Supercaps (long, long before anybody tried powering a 555 with dual PS). The problem went away when I went back to using a single Supercap. Maybe the  little NAPS powering the front panel is faulty?

There isn't a tuner output. Do you mean that the headline is connected to tape? The lights should not flash, and as Ron suggests the napsc could be dodgy?

Yes, the headline is connected to the hd in/out record socket (always with "Tuner" selected). If it were to be a faulty NAPSC it's odd that it would only display a fault when that one button is pressed; and then only on occasion. It does the same thing on power up, before the hicap is turned on. But that makes sense.

just a question, if you mind.

When NAC 202 powered off a NAPSC and 200 , Only Power supply/output option socket with 'single' blanking plugs should  be fitted and the one above by the NAPSC link removed?
