Superuniti WiFi question revisited?

Posted by: Dr_J on 23 November 2016

Calling all Superuniti owners; has anyone noticed low volume WiFi interference, RF noise, on their Superuniti speakers, you'll have to listen close up to the speakers as it's quite low, and obviously with no source playing. Sounds a bit like morse code, but noise rather  than tones.

Definitely not on the Superuniti's output as volume does not vary with the SU's  volume control and continues if the SU's amplifier setting is set to external, so assume is being picked up by the speaker cables - Chord Epic Super Twin.

Disappears completely if network switched to a wired connection, so conclude emanating from the SU's WiFi circuit?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Never used it via WiFi. But sounds like a mobile phone interference.

I haven't used it by wifi either but if this were an issue with the Superuniti it would be all over this forum. And it isn't. At all.

When you switch to a wired connection, is the wifi in your house still operating?

Was it always like this or is this a new problem?

House WiFi is still running, wired connection to an adjacent Apple Airport Express, less than 2 feet away.

And is this a new problem on a longstanding installation or have you only just set it up like this?

New as of 02/16, installation unchanged since, thought I'd try the SU WiFi, so only just noticed as I was standing in front of the system, setting up the WiFi with the remote.

As you say, if commonplace, others would have said, hence conclude noisy WiFi board?

And to be clear, WiFi connection works perfectly.

There seem to be two options: ignore it as wired is better and doesn't give rise to the problem, or get it looked at by Naim, as funny noises with wifi aren't normal. It could be a fault that would make it hard to sell in the future, should you wish to do so.

I think HH has summed it up well. You really shouldn't pick up interference on loudspeaker leads because they are very low impedance, so I doubt if it is getting in that way and anyway if your wireless access point is that close, you would still get a big signal even near the SU even if the SU wifi is off.

So it does sound a bit like an SU fault.  But I doubt that anyone would want to use an SU on wifi if they could avoid it, so you could ignore it too. You might need to get it repaired before selling it on though, as HH says.

Before sending it back to Naim, I would probably try a factory reset. Probably won't help but it won't hurt at least.

Thanks all, will give the factory reset a go.

Not a problem I ever experienced when I first had a Superuniti and used it on WiFi. Not that I tried it for long, as I found the SU WiFi so dreadful that I soon disabled it in favour of of an Airport Express, before going fully wired.

Well, would you credit it, factory reset did the trick!

Many thanks to David, and others, for the helpful suggestions.
