SuperCap burn in

Posted by: Sounsfaber on 24 November 2016

Hi, a rather strange and perplexing issue has reared it's ugly head. I've just picked up a #167.... nac 52 with matching SuperCap, both unserviced. I've been running a "last year Naim sanctioned serviced" SC with an unserviced nac 82.

After the 52/SC arrived I naturally plugged the 52 straight into the warm/turn on serviced SC and gave it a week to get my ears warmed up to the new Dynamics. During that week I also had the unserviced SC warming up for special A/B test over my work weekend. My idea was to get use to the serviced SC and 52 so I could see how things down grade over time...well as far as PSU's are concerned. When I unplugged the serviced SC and plugged the 16 year old unserviced SC I wasn't expecting too much to tell you the truth. Within 3 seconds I knew something MUST BE wrong with my serviced SC, wow the unserviced SC is sooo much better. So my question how the heck can that happen? Do some boxes sound like 35% better than others? Im thinking of sending the serviced SC back for another health check by our Naim doctor.
Also because I've never used the burndy and digital supply on the serviced SC until now, is it at all possible it needs to burn in that circuity? I know dumb question but i have no idea
im not upset, as the serviced SC sounded really great with the 82  or so I thought, I know if I send it in any problems will be found as things can happen over a year.

to make it easy for you 16 year old unserviced SuperCap sounds bloody amazing.

Serviced SuperCap sound really not so bloody amazing.
 Any thoughts?
cheers

When I had a 52, I sent the SC in for servicing. Upon its return it sounded quite dull and constipated-just lacking in the verve it had in spades before. That gradually faded into black and the serviced supercap was then at least as good, and probably better than it was prior to service. But I cannot remember how long that took-only that it was a very real phenomenon. However if you have a new unused Burndy, then that will need to be certainly broken it...there is a chiropractic way of doing so (no...I'm serious), but that comes with some risk, although it seems to effect a very quick run in. Maybe Richard Dane will elaborate on this chiropractic technique. It works. Just don't blame me if it does the equivalent of lacerating a vertebral artery during the process.

Hi I'm using the burndy that came with the 52, so it's well run in etc.

i guess what I'm trying to get down to the bottom of.

Is there any chance that the serviced SC burndy plug circuit hasnt been run is as I've only used the 82 on the SC since it's service last year.

i just don't want cry wolf to our service agent, when it could be something that simple.

cheers

Maybe...I'm guessing somebody's on something.

should point out the unserviced SC spent the first 6 years of its life in a rich man holidays home in the states, it wasn't used much. Was converted to 240 v by a Naim agent and sent down under. I'm the third owner. It's a real jem just like the 52 it was originally sold with. Put it this way it's remote is still in it original plastic bag and the sheet of 3m input stickers are all intact menus and boxes Like new.

I'm sorry I'm showing off. Well why not never herd of anything close these boxes this day and age.

really happy I've been showed the light... finally

You were using 4 of the output winding of the SC with an 82, you're using all of them with the 52 so your burn in theory may well be valid. I startied using my SCdr on a superline after a couple of years powering a 282 but any further burn in was overwhelmed by the improvement of using the powered AUX socket on the pre and the burn in of a new burndy.
