Who Has Stopped?
Posted by: GraemeH on 26 November 2016
The 'What do you want for Christmas?' thread caused me to reflect... that I don't want/need any new hi-fi. I have genuinely stopped.
NDX/Hugo TT/250DR/S400 is as good as I've ever heard and I shudder to think of the cost for what are comparatively tiny incremental improvements (based on the full monty 500 series I've heard at various times).
Anyone else convinced they are on the last rung of the ladder?

I thought I had stopped ...
... until yesterday ...
when TonyM and I popped over to JN's place for a heavy dose of vinyl spinning.
Damn, but that 552DR/500DR amp of his is a musical thing ...
Obviously not a Nait2, but even so, really rather good!
Best regards from a previously content FT

With 272? Wait for a 372 at least
From what I've heard I don't believe Naim will be releasing a N372 of sort and if they did it would be in there new chassis range...all speculation of a long time dealer

) or new naim super duper headphone amp, a turntable?
it never enddddsssssss!!!
A turntable will suffice
I would see a Rega RP10 / Aphelion performing admirably in your system.
Then my stage line with flat cap is no good, get a süperline with a hicap then get an interconnect for it.....
A nice project classic with an mm cartridge pre installed will just fine, its been a very hifi year for me!
With the addition of the 252 and NDS this summer, I'm finally at the point where I will stop buying boxes. I will be doing some tweaking and modding to get the best out of those boxes but no major capital investments. I do need to get serious about cable upgrades though...

Avoiding upgrading is easy: Just stop when you get the sound you like, and from that point cease reading hifi publications or going to exhibitions etc, until or unless you suffer equipment failure and the original is no longer available.
Just the SL DIN to XLR cables for my NAP300DR and I'm there for a while I think......but my suffering wife always looks at me and says - but you said that last time!

Or stop looking to certain forums which will tell you about 500s when you are thinking to buy muso and end up with 272!
nearly to stop....last upgrade for me is a NAP300 or a Pass Int60....ok, and maybe DeVore O/96....hmm, yes TQ Cables....forget to say Nagra DAC...and... :-)

Making music on a real instrument far exceeds what Naim can give.
Still can't get an organ reproducecd correctly on my Naim and speakers so I can't stop yet. Need extra full range speakers.
Now one more beer and continue on Tchaikovsky 5.
I fear you are in pursuit of the unattainable; the magnificent experience of a church organ is based on the church structure itself becoming part of the "instrument". You can chose whatever speakers you like but you're not going to get that kind of resonance, echo and extended decay on the notes.
My system is purely vinyl based. My system reprints what was Naim's top passive system (52/SC/135's) in the mid to late 1990's and sounds absolutely sublime to me on my best recordings. If I can ever arrange a demo with a top spec LP12 and 552/300 kit I might have a listen; I wonder how it will sound compared to the Olive kit? I dare not wonder ![]()
Were it not for lack of WAF factor I might also be tempted to try out the Kudos Titans with my kit.
I am so close to being done it is not funny. I just need a pair of ribbon tweeter floorstanders. Already have them sorted out, just need the money for them.

Which ones?
I stopped for 10 years while my mortgage was new, glad that phase is passed.
Well, very few seem to be in the 'stopped' space. The thread is turning into a 'what I'm uprading next' list - Which is fine.

I stopped, have stopped ...I think.
Over a ten year period I traversed my way up the Naim ladder all the way to the NDX, 252,250 and then sold it all. I am presently situated with a modest Rega system.

In other words.......................you are recommending the house be upgraded to incorporate a large stone-built room about 100' x 60' with a 60' high ceiling................
....no worries...........just have a quick word with the OP ie Graeme........![]()
PS just in case you are all wondering "what the hell.......?" take a quick look at the last few posts in the "It's me" topic in the Padded Cell.....

I'm waiting to listen to the new Nova with Neat Iota Alpha's in 2017. If (as I hope and it should) it surpasses SU into Dynaudio Excites that I heard a couple of years ago then the 202/200/NAPSC will go and I'll be off the ladder and spending on other life experiences instead.

Actually, a friend of mine bought a church. All the meeting rooms attached to it were transformed into living space however he always stays in the churchroom which has an increasing number of organs and related instruments.
For training the local boys choir, he bought an english organ which sounds quite good given all the overtones.
Regarding myself, I'm currently already happy when I hear the music and think something like 'this is truly an organ'. This happens only on my set of MoA Accoustics floorstanding speakers - being 30 years old. It comes down to a solid and a bit dry base.
Almost finished. I have my eye/ear on a new phono stage and then I think I'll be done. But I do fancy a second system and there is something about those chrome bumper boxes......
Not quite although I don't expect to buy much in 2017 apart from a linear power supply for my regen and a couple of power lines. Going to pause and buy a motorbike I think and leave any further hifi purchases, in the form of a 250dr and a Hugo TT until the following year.

No, don't buy the Harley, get the 250dr...![]()
Haha, I've got years to listen to hifi but at my age it's now or never to return to biking I suspect although which bike I'm not so sure yet. Still trying to stay away from super bikes and return to my roots though.

Beginning to become stopped. Here.. as in maybe that speaker I'm holding an imaginary candle for doesn't excist. If my present speakers had feelings they would kick me out the house.
@ ARDBEG10Y: Perhaps you're right, and I have thought as much myself often. They were indeed designed for a slightly different purpose. Yet, the combination of room and speakers seems to favour them over most 'proper' designs: I often have got confused midrange, resonating bass, not enough clarity and a sound firmly situated inside the speakers. The last experience in this sense was earlier today, with my brother-in-law's SHL5s, which sound magnificent in his living room and not very interesting here.
My situation, in short, is this: I am aware of the Sats' limits and shortcomings as main speakers in a largish room, but all the alternatives I have tried have disappointed me on some important parameter. I always go back to the Sats, even when I can hear their 'flaws' more clearly than usual. I have minimal experience of Wilson Benesch. I am beginning to think that in our living room what I have now is the best I can get. I have missed a good opportunity for SL2s some time ago, so I probably love this, in the end, even though I sometimes believe I don't.
