System Upgrade for Christmas
Posted by: Steve GTX on 29 November 2016
Present system:
N272, NAP250 DR, XPS DR, Power-lines, Super Lumina Interconnect......... all driving Focal Diablo Utopia.
What should I ask Santa to bring me for Christmas? I have been very good!
Steve
You are a bit stuck if the wonky legs are diagonally opposite.
What a coincidence...... my wonky legs are diagonally opposite ![]()
OK, this is my issue.
What makes a good rack? (no smut please).
Does it have to be rock solid or is isolation more important?

I've just gone through this process....and my conclusions are
- Tripod design for stability
- Stackable with minimal contact area
- Isolated glass shelves
Take a look at the Naim fraim..... and endeavour to get as close to that design as possible..... that's one reason why the Atacama range looks quite good, a similar design ie glass and wood with good isolation but at a much more affordable cost

Probably the best summary I have read!
One point of importance: NAIM equipmemt enjoys being placed on shelves made of toughened glass.
You could try Vuk's ball-nutters. ![]()
Both Fraim and isoblue are lossy horizontally but couple vertically, the isoblue legs are pegged to the shelves but the pegs should be a loose fit for it to work at its best, Fraim cones shouldn't touch the sides of the cups and you can hear when they do, the glass can move on the balls, were talking microvibrations here. Avoid steel. Three legs are better than four.
I was looking for a cheap solution for a second system with a TV on top and thought I'd cracked it with a flat pack stand from b&m for £60 but its incredibly heavy and too narrow to get two full width boxes side by side between the legs so my rega pre and power amps stick out the sides a bit on the (sagging) bottom shelf but at least the feet are on it. the middle shelf is OK as the virgin box is quite narrow so the DVD5 has enough room. They got one thing right however, it wobbles, no need to level it as it finds its own. The system actually sounds surprisingly good on this piece of c**p.
This is getting interesting.
I'm leaning towards building my own rack (so will have to ask for something else for Christmas).
40mm solid oak shelves x 4,
45mm square oak legs (isolated with spikes) at each level, including the base.
and a granite or toughened glass isolation platform on one shelf, sitting on ball bearings in cups (ball nutters) to take the source .
Am I on the right track?
