matching B&W 804d2 to 272/250dr

Posted by: Petersfi on 01 December 2016

I think my superuniti paired with B&W 804d2’s is a bit of a mullet.

Based on the forum comments, a 272/250dr should fix that, but if we go further and add an XPSdr, are we then in monkfish territory? Just wanna be a halibut when I grow up…..

Worth a great deal, thanks Bert.

if the SU cant get the most out of the 804d2s, adding more demanding 803d's would still leave room for improvement. I'm not sure my room presently is suitable for a speaker upgrade, not the dimensions..the neighbours. I can see though that the SU 803s3 combo would likely be an improvement over 272/250dr 804d2. Its a slippery slope...

Peter, the SU is not the most powerfull of all, so yes, in your case upgrade to 250 may be very worthwile in combination with the 804D2/D3. Did you upgrade already, or are you only testing/auditing?

Hi Bert,

My advice is to do it. I believe Naim have sorted the process so they don't keep the amp for weeks on end any more.

I'm not sure how to describe the modified amp other than it sounds gorgeous. It is better in every respect, but mostly for me, the non-hifi stuff that just makes you grin. There a couple of reviews from Hifi Critic that are suitably rapturous and available from the main website, I think.

Although the 272 figures prominently in my imminent upgrade plans, I can't help but think certain aspects of the forum are becoming slightly predictable and formulaic. Whatever the question, the 272/250dr combo (oops, forgot the xpsdr!!) appears to be the answer! Ok, slightly tongue-in-cheek, but I'm sure you all know where I'm coming from. Can Naim be in danger of becoming a one trick pony (at least for us mere mortals who don't/can't aspire to 6+ boxes).

I totally agree..It is very easy to get on the upgrade path only to realize one part of the system only sounds optimally with another potentially expensive piece of kit. I have a 112x pre and it gets slated all over the place on these forums..I have it connected to a Flatcap 2x and it made a great difference to the sound of my computer and Meridian DAC..which I will change before I change the amp setup..The 112x made a big jump when the flatcap 2x was connected , even using the modist source..The sound got much better in all ways...I will one day get a Naim streamer but out of my price range for the forseeable future...I am very happy with premium spotify.

People always tend to think in black boxes, while there are so many ways of further improving a system. It can even be the simple things of advising somebody to move from Flac in a naim streamer to wav, using special feet for speakers, cables...

The 272/250 is a great combination - but not the answer to all questions fo advice...

I pulled the pin yesterday and am now well along the "true path" with the 272/250dr driving my 804's.

Thanks to all for your thoughts and advice.

No more upgrades required....right?

I have that exact setup and it is the best hi-fi I have ever owned.. There is zero reason to upgrade unless it is what your heart desires..
