WiFi vs cable
Posted by: Crofta on 01 December 2016
I use I-Radio and Tidal on SU via WiFi. I heard that there is more proper way to use cable instead of WiFi. If it is really, which cable would be recommendable for SU instead of WiFi ? Would anybody advice, please ?
Jiri
Any Cat 5e or better cable plugged into a switch that connects your router, streamer and NAS should be great
Hi Simon,
thank you, I just no have idea on "better" suitable for SU, would you recomed, please ?
Hi - it really doesn't need to be difficult - you could pop down to your local PC World or go to eBay and buy regular 5e ethernet cable and that will be fine. Sure there are nuanced specialist cables but you can tweak with those later

Jiri - I hope you use your SuperUniti for more than just iRadio and Tidal.
With a reliable ethernet cable you can also stream high-resolution audio files from a local Network Attached Storage (NAS).
You beat me to the same question Adam - Jiri, what else do you stream, do you have music stored on PC/Mac or a NAS ??? This brings real 21st century hi-fi with high res music in 24-bit & is so much better than Tidal & iRadio, problem is high res streaming really suffers with wifi & ethernet is the only way.
for ; Tidal, iRadio, local storage (NAS), etc; wired ethernet connection will be always the best solution.
Ps: I believe that Wifi won't handle 24 bit 192khz at all.
+ 1 to the above.
I ran my SU on wifi for a year or so before hard wiring it - I needed a 30m length so it took a bit of creative cable routing & drilling etc. However it's much more reliable now in terms of the NAIM app finding the SU straight away and less prone to drop-outs. Not sure if SQ is better (certainly its not worse!)
24 /192 wouldn't stream over wifi (24/96 was fine) but no problems wired.

When I had a Superuniti on WiFi it was hard pushed to handle 16/44, never mind 24/192, but after I put an Airport Extreme inside my ISP supplied router, and wired an Airport Express to the SU, it would stream 24/192 pretty reliably, so it can be done with the right setup. Of course it's best to go with wired Ethernet, though.
those new units like Unity Nova; do they support also 5GHz wi-fi ?
Yes.

Yes, I understand. I'm living at the apartment which is surrounded by the other neighbors and wifi signals . It's impossible for me to stream the music via wifi, it would be catastrophic

this might resolve the problems for those who like to use wifi connection.
