Naim newbie's experience w/Supernait 2

Posted by: cmichaelo on 01 December 2016

I'm a newbie to Naim and I just acquired the Supernait 2 and NDX streamer to replace my Rotel 1570/1582 pre/post-amp combo which I had grown increasingly unhappy with due to its sloppy bass handling and tendency to create an annoying/blurred soundstage when many instruments are playing at the same time.

The speakers are B&W 805 diamond.

Enter the SN2+NDX... I'm just blown away how well the SN2 controls the speakers and their engaging sound in general. Now, first of all, I didn't think the 805s had bass. Now they got bass and it's punchy and controlled and, call my imaginative, but it sounds like they even go a little further down in frequency. Or maybe it's an illusion as a result of the more control, yeah probably.  This from an 80W integrated amplifier as compared to a 200W post-amp. And the sound stage is more precise and engaging. I love it.

I've heard numerous times how important the amplifier is for the B&W speakers. But not until now do I see the evidence of it. As an electrical engineer I don't quite understand it yet. But I'll gladly accept the evidence.

Anyway, I'm glad to join you all. I should have been a Naim newbie a long time ago :-)

Put on the hicap dr and I think you will love the sn2 even more.

Welcome indeed. The SN2 is a very fine amplifier and the NDX a perfect partner.

Enjoy.

Welcome [@mention:68159344021810394]. The SN2 is a great amp. SN1 owner here. It's driving a pair of Revel f206s very well.

But what happens when your NDX feeds the old Rotel amps? Could it be that you suddenly have bass too?

Congratulations,  you have an impressive combination.

What speaker cable are you using ?

Welcome to this mad-house

If I may - hope that you have plugged your Naim boxes directly to wall sockets. No fancy power-conditioning strip is needed.

Congrats... my folks have the SN2+NDX and Allae's, great sound!

Congrats on your new naim kit. My SN2 with Neat sx2 speakers really put a smile on my face everytime I listen to them.

So you're saying the DACs could be the reason? I suppose that could be part of the explanation too. It would be an interesting experiment for sure. I still have the Rotels, though packed away for shippping to a buyer.

Thanks for the warning. But I'm afraid all they'll find are some old mushy vitamin pills.. if they are lucky :-)

Thanks all for the warm welcome, advice and upgrade suggestions. I think I'll for sure try some different speaker cable soon after I settle down a little. I've only had the equipment for one week. I feel there's so much to learn about it and I doubt neither of the two are broken in yet.  And I am so impressed and appreciate the versatility of the NDX. What a piece. It has opened up a new aspect of living through the accessibility to Naim radio and Tidal and the fact that I can control the programming and volume from my office chair with, literally, the lift of one single finger. With the Rotels I had to get out of my chair, walk, grab a remote, click some buttons, walk and get back in my chair. Now, lift a finger. Nice.

Cmichaelo, welcome aboard!

When you get a break from just enjoying music, and your bank balance recovers, consider some Naim NACA5 speaker cable.

Building on the advice given by Charile: minimum length: 3.5 meters per each speaker, terminated with Naim plugs on the amp side (the ones that came in the box with your SN2). On the speaker's side - use whatever is suitable for your speakers - make sure that the speaker terminals and the plugs are of a similar materials e.g if you have gold-plated sockets, use gold-plated pins, etc.

Whilst we are on cables: DIN-DIN interconnects are the ones you should be using. Stick with the one that came in a NDX box for now. We can help you spend more money on an interconnect later Speaker cable is the most important one now.

There is an ongoing discussion right now on the nDac. It seems that the Dac brings the solid bass.

I have only a SN1 which has a Dac and an older AV2 acting as Dac. If I connect my AV2 to an older technics mid-fi system, it suddenly has bass too. However ... the dynamics are fully dependent on the quality of the amp.

At least in my circumstances ...

I had the experience (maybe completely imagined by my brain) that the (soldered!) Naim plugs do bring an improvement and that my cheap Norstone goldplated speaker plugs have negative impact on the SQ.

Since you mention speaker plugs, which ones do you use, Adam?

Welcome Michaelo, enjoy the music.

I've heard an SN2 in my dealers and a very nice sound it was too, I think you are in for years of enjoyment.

... and I hope you don't strain that finger too much

Welcome Cmichaelo, glad you are loving your new system.

I am also an NDX/SN2 owner, with PMC speakers, and haven't looked back since.

Along with all the other great ways to spend your money some time in the future, may I also suggest adding an XPS to your NDX?  :-)

Reveals even more layers than you are hearing already. You have a lot of options now though, including doing nothing and simply enjoying the music! Enjoy!

Welcome, I'm sure you''ll have years of fun.  I love my SN2, it's a really capable amp that never lets me down.  I've added a Hicap DR to mine which made it even better.

On the NACA5 I use Naim Ovator speaker plugs (NACA5 connects NAP250DR to Ovators S-400).
