Asset Server R5

Posted by: Bart on 04 December 2016

I've been paying less attention to hi fi hardware and software for a few months now . . . and realized that a few things were not up to date.  I updated Asset Server on my QNAP nas to the R5 version (Premium Registered).  I immediately noticed that it now sends initially-looking goofy icons to the Naim App for such items as Artist/Album, Album, Genre, etc etc.  The icons for the letters of the alphabet are similarly new and a bit goofy.  I suspect this is coming from Asset, as Minimserver does not look the same.

Other than this . . . any changes of which I should be aware?

I'm still using Asset as my primary server, on QNAP.  I backup the QNAP to my old Synology nas, on which I keep Minim running just for kicks.

(I also realized I had 3.x.x running on my Qute . . . upgraded that to streamer software 4.4 today too.)

I still what you mean now - it would be great to have some greater flexibility/configurability re. icons for the different Genres, but that could take a while, as the standard list is long.

I also think it would be great to have the ability to use an image for each Artist - so I maintain my Library as:

Artist -> Album -> Tracks with Album Artwork

So if there was an image at the Artist level, this could overwrite the UpStream artwork for that Artist.

Yes, I think Asset R6 will make some good progress forward in both the icons, but also new functionality and performance. He just needs to finish and release the Windows version, and the Linux variants flow - they seem to have got better at developing for cross-platform (Win, macOS, Linux, NAS variants).

The Contributing Artist layout was a suggestion, and I could remember where I had seen it before, and then I was in iTunes adding something to my AppleTV and there is was - more than happy with how they all look today.
I only drop down to further icons for 'Dynamic Browsing' and 'Advanced Search' all other top-level tree directories, use UpStream artwork.

I am now looking to go back through all my Classical and retag for Orchestra, as I have bought it in the 'Tag Panel' within the  mp3tag configuration:

Simon, Here you go. An alternative to the contributing artist icon. Posted as 500px on the forum, so just grab this image and rename as per the original...

Perfect, many thanks. How like Apple designs they have become!

Many thanks again, Simon

No problems! I know Apple have their many detractors, but their simple OS / iOS interface and icon design generally hits the mark and communicates well overall.
