while waiting for the 4 pin din to arrive from Naim i connected my Hicap to my CDS 5X which had a flatcap
well the cable arrived today
i did not want to lose the Hicap from my CD 5 X so i took the flatcap back and got another Hicap for my Supernait 2
you guys know your stuff even from cold the extra detail is just amazing
thanks members best forum in the world,![]()
I thought the Hicap on the CD5x was awful when I tried it. It made the CD player sound like it was on steroids and a little bit crazy. The flatcap 2x, on the other hand, was just perfect.
I love it.![]()
HiCaps are great. Fish don't like adrenalin rushes. ![]()
I just put a hicap on my old CD5 and have been very pleased. It adds detail without being bright. I love the flexibility of it. Second hand they can be a real bargain.
tony,
Like you, I have a SN2 and CD5x. While there is a big initial 'wow' hi-fi factor with a PSU on either (speed and slam), I'd suggest some long-term listening and evaluate the overall sonic balance, especially with regard to the bass output. I'm in HH's camp that there can be a steroid effect with a PSU on the 5x, to me overemphasizing the bass impact. I've found the same with a HCDR on my SN2, but these things are all speaker and room dependent. If you find some fatigue creeping into your listening sessions I'd consider canning the PSUs despite any initial enamor.
So the CD5X sounds like it's on steroids when the Hicap is added to it. Whether it sounds more detailed, punchy and dynamic or weird, crazy and unnatural, that is more toward individual's taste.
This thread reminds me on the comparison between the NAC 202 and NAC 282 where the latter sounds like the former on steroids. On a few occasions the NAC 282 @ NAC 202 on steroids might prove to be "too much".
I've tried anything. In the end, it's down to personal parameters. If Tony loves punch and impact, it is better. Why some feel the need to be pedagogic about a hobby, is beyond me.
I'm not sure how any inference of pedagogy can be drawn from any of the comments made so far.

Got to go with HH on this one. Surely one of the purposes of the forum is to share experiences and opinions? Not sure how that qualifies as the theory and practice teaching and education? In any event, even were it the case the appropriate term would be andragogic, given the majority of forum members are over 18!!
I didn't even know you could connect two HiCaps to SN2. How does the connection go and how about the sound quality improvements compared to one HiCap? You could go for a used SuperCap with the price of two HiCaps though.
You can't. One is on the SN and the other is on the CD5x.
