Not again... Tidal and Mu-so dropouts..

Posted by: GlennS54 on 05 December 2016

The Tidal dropouts are back. Within last week I have been experiencing numerous dropouts with Tidal on a mu-so. In US with Comcast. This was common place earlier in 2016, and I considered giving up, but the firmware update a few months ago seemed to fix it and I was delighted. I know there are numerous factors at play, i.e., latency etc, but it was so nice hearing the naim sound for hours on end.  I am a Naim devotee since my first Naim Nait2 in 1992. Just wanted to throw this out there to see if anyone else is experiencing the same thing.

My main system based on the NDS had seldomly drop outs - even in the early days. My Muso is further away from the main network and is struggling a lot, so much that I don't bother listening anymore. Sorry to hear that's back as a problem for you. Perhaps more knowledgeable people on the forum can help...

Started having Tidal freezes yesterday, but only through the Naim app.

Tried restarting everything - router, NDS, Naim app - but no luck.

Saw I was not up to date on the Naim app, but the 4.9 version did not help.

Am at the 4.4.00 build on the NDS. The NDS uses a Cat5e connection to my Cisco wireless router. Only my iPad running the Naim app is wireless, and am not having any other network issues using the iPad.

This is the first problem I've had with Tidal via Naim since signing up, and it's not a problem with the Tidal service itself.

Also have a Sonos Connect running Tidal, connected to the NDS's digital optical input. No issues playing Tidal this way.

Any suggestions for additional trouble shooting would be much appreciated!

And oh yeah, my Gen 2 iPad is up to date at iOS 10.1.1.

I unexpectedly experienced some dropping out this morning.

Upon further investigation I discovered my better half had moved a table lamp containing an energy saving compact fluorescent bulb next to the AirPort Extreme. Moving the extreme just 18" away from the lamp has cured my dropouts.

Cordless phones and other base stations close to routers and wifi access points can also be detrimental to your internet.

Make sure you haven't had any similar changes made unbeknown to you in your system.

I may have figured out what went wrong.  Or, perhaps more  accurately, the Tidal freezes have stopped.

After a long thunderstorm season of unplugging the NDS's ethernet cable from its local switch many times, I think I may have worn the connector or connection out.  I replaced the Cat5e cable with a new one, chose a different unused port, and now Tidal through the Naim app appears to be working well again.

May make sense in retrospect...or not.  My Sonos Connect is connected to the same local switch, so the switch itself must be working ok. I had no Tidal freezes via its optical output to the NDS.  Finally decided it had to be either 1) a Naim app bug, 2) some interaction between the control point and the NDS itself, or 3) a dodgy NDS connection.  Given all the components are up to date on software, the latter was the only thing I could change myself.

Still doesn't explain why UPNP through the Naim app seemed to work just fine, and only Tidal was freezing.  But hey, I am satisfied with getting back to business as usual.  Spent some time last night looking at new routers and switches, just in case.  Am glad to be able to defer the upgrade effort and expense.

My house, and especially my phone line, is quite exposed to lightning strikes, which is one of the reasons I put in an optical LAN instead of Cat5. One less thing to (forget to) unplug then the rumbling starts.
