Where to put the spaces? - Another Fraim Query.

Posted by: Sloop John B on 09 December 2016

And so with the departure to fresh fields of a NAT01 and CD555&PS I have the following spaces.

I'm presuming my spaces are better utilised in the brains side but would appreciate any suggestions for the point of view of optimisation with respect to spacing and cable dressing.

I'm not an expert, but imo...

Rega P3 on VulKan wall shelf above either rack.

Nac 552   L-R Hugo TT   (top shelves - same level)

Empty --- L-R --- Empty

 ---tall----  L-R 552PS  (nap 300

NAP 300  L-R 300PS

Empty  --- L-R ---- Empty  (bottom shelves)

NAP 300 to sit 'below' a tall shelf, 4 shelves left - 5 shelves right, convert one of the std fraims to a tall one, this will bring both racks to same height, it looks so much better. Alternatively put one shelf into storage so the racks are same height albeit top shelves will be lower, and there will be a greater gap to the VulKan and only bottom shelves empty : )

Sjb, I hope you got what you wanted for the cd555.

Would a nap500 be on the cards.

Thanks Debs, all this selling is in preparation for packing up everything for a "deep retrofit" of the house, so I won't be moving the Rega to a separate VulKan wall shelf but must consider that for what will be a slightly larger room. I'll probably sell  one level of fraim to get them level rather than buying a bigger dividers but I'm not worrying at the moment about aesthetics for the 6 months it will be like this.

Considering the tide being out for CD replay at the moment I didn't do too badly with the price, it just became too hard to justify pitting it into storage when I used it about 3-4 times in as many months.

I don't think I will go the 500 route, I did look at this but the jump was too high, so I got the 300 DRed with the expectation that my amplification is sorted for some time now and any changes will be to the streaming source.

This is my current thinking on where to put the spaces

Or perhaps have the brains side with the 2 spaces and have one above and below the 552?

In the photo at the top I'd guess the burndies clear the floor. If you just move the 552 to the top of its stack it the sits next to the 300 ps so move that down a shelf and the head unit up one. The 552ps can go on the lowest shelf. Are you happy with the Hogo and (I presume phono stage) sharing a shelf?

If the stacks are too close for the burndies to clear like that maybe move a shelf across and raise the 552 up a bit more. The aim is to not have the 552 on a level with a big ps while keeping the burndies and any hiline suspended.

Moving my 552 from a level with a 500ps slightly higher on an adjacent shelf with a sc below the 500ps to the next level up has brought the system to life. It could of course just be resetting the Fraim but I don't think its that.

You'll probably need to connect the earth point on the rear of the pre to ground to give the system a signal earth now the 555 is gone.

I'd put the 552 at A, the 300 at C and the Hugo at F.

I think HH's suggestion sounds good. I have my Hugo on its own Fraim glass shelf, albeit mine is on top, next to my 252 which is on top of its stack. For the Hugo it does  seem to definitely benefit helping it with that vinylesque top end sparkle you hear in some recordings with voices and some instruments like strings... I suspect it's the mechanical isolation into the connecting leads
