naim unitserve

Hello,
i would like to have a help from you. I don't find informations to transfer hd files from a pc to naim unitserve hdd? do i have to use an usb to usb cable? i know that the unitserve can store hd files up to 24/192. But how to transfer my downloads on the unitserve storage?
thanks a lot
With the Unitiserve connected to a network, you should be able to see it as an external drive on a computer. You should see a Music folder, which is only for CDs ripped on the Unitiserve, and a Downloads folder, which is the one you need.
If you need to edit any metadata, album art, etc., do this first, not after you have transferred the music folder. Then just use drag and drop, or copy and paste, to move the folder to the US.
so i don't need a usb to usb cable? is it a sharing or a real transfer from pc to the unitserve?
No need for a USB cable, the transfer is done on your network. As you have a Naim streamer, I presume your Unitiserve is connected to your network via Ethernet cable, which is all you need.
The folder is copied to the Unitiserve HDD, it's not just a share. (You can also set it up to see shared music folders, but that is a different thing.)
Technically speaking a folder called 'Downloads' is a network SHARE. This is the Naim UnitiServe speak for folders which can be edited and modifed externally.
Folder called STORE is a one where UnitServe stores (hece the name) CD rips it has made.
great, it is working. But it seems to be very long: 9 hours to transfer around 50gb of downloads. Is it not quickier with an usb cable?
thanks already...very much. I don't have to buy big memory sticks...
Unless you have an older version of the UnitiServe ... unfortunately, these don't have the 'Downloads' folder and hence no possibility to store other music than the ripped files...
Just let it trundle away.
It does take a while...

The internal DOWNLOAD folder is available on versions with an hard drive. For SSD all folders are located on a NAS.

It does take while. There is no need for USB cables - you have a much faster connection - it's called Ethernet (LAN cable).
9 hours seems like quite a long time, I once managed to transfer about 250 albums in 45 minutes, which was much faster than I was expecting. I think it depends more on your network than on the Unitiserve.
There is no way to do this via USB, it can only be done with a network connection.
Remember to keep a backup copy of all your music files. (I'm surprised Adam hasn't reminded you of this already!)

Chris is absolutely right - keep an off-line back up copy.
Apologies for not reminding earlier - tough weekend
ok thanks you all very much. I have a recent version of the unitserve...and it is downloading.
i will try ethernet now. Do you know if there is a difference in sound quality between the downloads transferred into the unitserve or put on a memory stick at the back on the unitserve?

I assumed you had already connected it via Ethernet - how else can you connect it to download, or to play to your streamer?

I can't answer that, as I've never tried it. For me, the whole point of the Unitiserve is to use it's hard drive for storage.

Really? This was not the case with the HDX I used to own ... this was an older version with 2x 400 GB drives - hence my reply ...

Pierre - how exactly did you connect your UnitiServe to the network?
As to your question: a memory stick will be treated as an additional SHARE location. As to a sound quality - I would not expect there to be any differences.

Even if it has an internal hard drive, a UnitiServe (or HDX) won't have the Downloads folder unless it has a recent operating system and system board. I believe that the early uServes that had hard drives, but no Downloads folder, need a factory refresh including new hardware before it supports the Downloads folder feature. There are likely plenty of those floating around in use.
i connected lan cable and it was faster, much faster. Now all downloads are on the unitserve, i am happy. No dealer could explain me exactly how to do that. Thanks you all.
Well done Pierre. If you need more help you know where to find us.
Enjoy the music,
