Volume Control

Posted by: Nigel 66 on 13 December 2016

Dear Forum

I'm using an ND5 XS into a SN2, which I'm really happy with. However, I have a vague recollection that I've read somewhere that you can control the volume via the Naim app which I have on an i-phone.

I've read the instruction manual, and haven't been able to find out whether this is possible (maybe I imagined it) and how to do it if it is. Does anyone know if this is feasible, whether any extra cables are required and whether it works !

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks, Nigel

Nigel, all you need is a 3.5mm mini jack to mini jack lead - any will do just fine, no need for anything fancy.  Then plug in the Remote in/out sockets liking the NDX and Supernait 2 and enable in streamer and the App.

On the Naim app, you need to go to Settings > Other settings > Enable volume control.

You need a cheap 3.5mm to RCA lead to connect the streamer to the amp.

Read the System Automation guide from Naim's website.

Scratch your head.

Read it again.

Swear a lot.

Read it again

Eventually, by accident, trial and error, or luck, you'll get it right. Then you'll have volume control on the app, which is very handy.

Thanks for the responses. I'll order a lead on the 'net and give it a try.

Definitely worth soldiering on with - system automation is a great feature. If you get stuck, post again and we'll try get you going...

My lead is 3.5mm to RCA, but Richard mentions 3.5mm to 3.5mm as well. The System Automation guide mentions both types, but fails explain which one to choose or why. Best to check this before you order.

Have found a 3.5m to 3.5m lead so I've plugged that it.

Gone to the app (version 4.9) and looked under Setting>Other Settings but can't see Enable Volume Control anywhere.

Any suggestions?

ND5XS into SN2 requires mini-jack to mini-jack.

For NAC pre-amps an RCA to mini-jack is needed.

You probably need to switch on system automation in the streamer. Use the spanner button on the remote to find it.

Hi Adam

I've found the settings area under the cogged wheel, however I can't see anything about volume control?

I think HH is right, if system automation isn't set up on the streamer first, the app doesn't show the volume control as it wouldn't be relevant.

Cogged wheel > Other settings > Show volume control (must be ticked and lit up in green).

System automation must be set up on your ND5XS.

The set up is quite counterintuitive - but it works.

Nigel,

After the cogged wheel > Other settings > Show volume control.

From memory, and as Nigel says above, you need to turn on system automation on the streamer, using the remote as described.

Huge cross posting frenzy .................... glad to read that it's working.

For future reference, set up on the streamer is System automation > Preamp > Enable

When did listening to music become so complicated?

Posted on: 13 December 2016 by greekspec2

I wish on the Naim it showed the volume number like my N272 so I dont have to look at the lcd

When we got too lazy/old/weak/overweight* to get up and turn the volume control by hand.
