System Pics 2017

Welcome to System Pics 2017. To get us started here is a picture of my setup: other than longer legs on the rack and some new wires, it's just the same as last year.

Great looking rack - really like that. What wood ?

Another vote of admiration for that rack system - very nice looking.

'Always have a backup' is a principle you can apply to hardware too. I travel a lot for work, and my ZX2/SE846 always comes with me.

Very nice James (and Chris).  Curious, is that a Silver Dragon cable headphone cable?  I use a Black Dragon cable with the much modest SE425.   Did Drew recommend going with the silver w/ the 846s?

Jazz in that room, with those curtains, that painting and those vases? Miles Davis, I assume?

Not a far guess, actually Miles Davis piano player, Wynton Kelly, teaming up with Kenny Burrell on a mono recording from 1958:

Hi Pat - Well spotted. I just went for the Silver version to give a bit more top end 'bite' which is exactly what i got. The main reason for changing though was to make full use of the TRRS connector on the Sony - this allows the ground returns from the capsules to be separated right back to the internal amplifier in the player rather than combining them close to the capsules into a single return as in the standard cable. It really works well and was a nice upgrade for about £100 or so.

The Rack is a Custom Design Milan Reference 10 Acoustic 4 Shelf Hi-Fi Stand in Walnut wood. The wood is a solid piece and not vaneer. Thank for appriciation.

Nice set up there James. What kind of files are you using on the Sony?

Posted on: 16 January 2017 by james n

Cheers Rack - i just use ALAC files now as both the Melco and Sony sound the same with ALAC as they do with full fat AIFF (unlike some previous setups).

Saved myself a stack of drive space too

FLAC for me. Mostly CD rips from the Unitiserve, which I store in FLAC anyway, and just copy them to the ZX2. The built in storage holds about 300 CDs.

How are your experiences with this headphone cable, I have considered it as upgrade - but so far stuck to the normal cable which got supplied with the SE846 ?

Much better Bert - adds some top end 'bite' but more importantly the very impressive bass on these phones goes even deeper and tighter. Really excellent VFM too - i think you'd like it.

Ok thanks will consider it, while I am also tempted by the Shure KSE 1500....., so let's see what wins....

Apologies, last question James. Does this cable also have the memory position like the original cable, I like that in the original cable to bring the earphones good in position in my ear...

Posted on: 16 January 2017 by james n

No worries Bert - yes it has the same 'stiff' section close to the drivers so you can mould the cables around your ears.
