System Pics 2017

Welcome to System Pics 2017. To get us started here is a picture of my setup: other than longer legs on the rack and some new wires, it's just the same as last year.

Oh dear. Very sorry to hear that. They are such lovely dogs especially with children. Very best wishes to you all.

so finally after many years of viewing, apologies for the poor pictures, will try to take better pictures after our holidays.

By day, not sure how to correct for the outside light.

At night, my camera technique does not do the canals much good. Will have to practice :-)

Those X2's? Are way closer together than mine. How is the soundstage?

Apologies.....forgot to add context above S3!

I hung the absorbers on the walls. The sound is excellent. No echoes more.

Great room & pics!!
Those are unique absorbers?

Posted on: 22 February 2017 by S3

It sounds good Arnsider but, to be honest, the room layout (it's also my office) gives me very little flexibility for speaker placement. I also know that, ideally, the electronics would not be between the X2s but they really have to be in that room. How far apart are your X2s?

Dave what speaker cables you use?  These do not look like stiff NACA5?

The final picture shows SL cable. It might be confusing as on the right you can also see all the power leads round the power block. On the left there is the mains lead to the power block trailing down. Might also be able to spy some CAT6 coiled up as well in that left corner. If you look again you can see the speaker cable making lazy curves on the floor. We all know this is not possible with NACA5. I was immediately impressed with the SL speaker cable and also the DIN-DIN I/C. Less so with the XLR-DIN. I am happy with the "final" speakers after months of travel and experiment.

I need to take some better pictures sometime. You can also see the last bits of polystyrene on the floor as the installers (speakers) had just left when I took the last picture. I have cleaned up since I have to add.

How would you describe the difference between the two I/C (DIN-DIN vs DIN-XLR)? I'm asking because i have the SL speaker cable and mains Power Line's and I'm about to purchase the SL I/C soon.

If I may also add to this one....

I used to run my main 'rig' with a Chord Signature DIN-XLR and NACA5. And that was good.
Swapping just for SuperLumina speaker cables made for a bit uncomfortable pairing - the sound was perhaps a bit more transparent, but..... I went back to NACA5.

Only when I finally got the test version of SuperLumina DIN-XLR and installed that, together with SuperLumina speaker cables, did the whole thing snap into focus. It was finally good enough to persuade me to buy the whole SuperLumina loom.

Understood, i can't wait to get mine to have the full loom

I found the IC DIN-DIN to be a great step up. It replaced a Hi-line. It was also an immediate and positive gain as was the speaker cable. The DIN-XLR was the last piece of the loom. It was more difficult for me to hear the immediate changes. Perhaps the IC was still running in as well but I kept my puchases quite some months apart to avoid this. That was quite a whiloe ago now and I cannot recall what the old sound was like anymore - we get used to the incremental gains very quickly. At least I do. I am glad I made these changes, it avoids the nagging doubts later down the line. I never tried any alternatives to the SL so cannot compare with Chord etc. As with all upgrades, if it makes sense for you, go ahead. The Full Loom was notceable but nothing like dropping the 500 into my system. Makes the 300 sound broken (Adam?)

Indeed

I was recently toying with an idea how to improve my second system (SN2 + HiCap) and I thought about some incremental steps. Sources are rather OK so they will stay.
But than again, I said to myself, that NAC552 and NAP 500 make everything else sound broken by comparison....  Why do things in halves....

So I still use my SN2 + HiCap (for now...).

Adam, you need to feel pain and guilt in equal measure to test if the upgrade was valid. "Bodger's First Law of Sonics".

I can understand that too S3. Am sure a lot of people are constrained by various domestic issues with speaker placement. Mine are just over 2 metres apart in a room approx 8x4 metres firing down the length of the room. Makes me want to meddle with speaker placement AGAIN....arrrgh! I also have solid oak flooring and was interested in Novichok's wall hanging absorbers ....interesting

Hi Artferg20,

Intrigued by the perspex cover you have for your RP8 in "skeleton" mode. Is this a standard item from Rega or is it custom-made?

Nice rack. Clean lines. What's the make and did you notice a change in sound quality?
