System Pics 2017

Welcome to System Pics 2017. To get us started here is a picture of my setup: other than longer legs on the rack and some new wires, it's just the same as last year.

Yes, it was the best (and last) plasma made by Panasonic
Yes, unfortunately they stopped with pasma's .

I had a Panny VT65 plasma for a few years, and very good it was too. However, the 4K Samsung that replaced it has a much better picture.

I think the reference one was a ZT model - a trully great one.

Yes, but they made only few of them finally. VT was very close to ZT, and was TV of the Year back in 2013, when they decided to stop the production.
Image is really cinema-like, not comparable to actual artificial ones, calculated and recalculated, even in 4k.

Having spent the last 2-3 months auditioning new sets, I struggle to agree with you Tony. My current set is the Panasonic VT 50" plasma, bought in 2013, and I still find, especially with films, the picture to be the most satisfying and realistic. Yes, most of the 4K Samsungs have far more 'pop', and perhaps inkier blacks, but they all seem, somehow, more artificial than the plasma. After 3 hours watching my brothers LG OLED set I found my eyes were really tired, whereas my plasma is much more relaxing to watch. I dread the day my set fails, as I really don't know what could replace it!

First I've seen a negative OLED pic quality comment.
I haven't seen one yet to comment for myself. Still enjoying my Samsung plasma.
Pioneer made good ones too. They cancelled plasmas production before Panasonic did.

Yeap - managed to get one of the last ZT 60". Had it professionally calibrated too.
One word to describe the image: wow!!!
My OLED pixel issue seems to have gone away and it's back on top form. I wasn't looking forward to sending this one back after forking out for calibration. It'll be interesting to see OLED offerings Pansonic, Samsung and Sony offerings - they all seem to be jumping on the bandwagon now. I wouldn't mind guessing that LG makes the panels.
As for TVs of yore I was somwhet taken aback by the quality of an old Philips CRT in my hotel room in the US a few weeks ago. Not half bad and still working very well indeed despite commercial breaks every 5 minutes![]()
The problem with plasmas was "ghost images" or rather "screen burn" - first approx. 300 hours were critical for plasmas so everyone with knowledge knew that watching constantly the same program (RTL, Eurosport, etc) would create the issue - which is "ghost images"

My Pioneer 427XDE is still going great guns in our bedroom. Stunning set even today, although mounting in on wall brackets on a stud wall proved interesting!

Don't worry, you haven't got to agree with me Timmo! I originally had no intention of changing from the plasma, but I made the mistake of looking at 4K sets out of curiosity. I was struck by the extra detail and contrast and, unusually for a retailer, they allowed me to play around with the settings. Sure, you can make the picture almost surreal, but with time spent setting the display up properly my set, a Samsung UE65JS9500, is in no way artificial but has a lovely natural quality. With 4K material via my Oppo 205 player the image quality is quite wonderful and leaves the old plasma well behind. Again, I thought the only possible replacement for the plasma would be an OLED, but I preferred the picture on the Samsung, something that "Which?" happens to agree with. We'll all have our own preferences, thank God, which is why it's so important to review at length, make up your own mind, and not be unduly swayed by the opinions of others.

You could try the Panasonic TX-58DX902B which (along with its bigger 65" sibling) is the top of the range of 4K TVs from Panasonic, which to my eyes has a more natural colour palette than the alternatives from Samsung and LG. It has Ultra HD Premium specification (supporting 'High Dynamic Range' (HDR) content), is 4K certified by THX. Its adaptive backlight control also allows it to provide blacks that are excellent, although not as impressive as the top of the range LG OLEDs.
I chose this TV over the equivalent Samsung or LG equivalent models (its much cheaper than the top of the range OLEDs) , although they too are very good indeed. I have 4 or 5 Ultra HD Blu-rays with HDR, and they are truly stunning, but the upscaling of non HDR content is also fantastic. I was very happy with my previous Samsung (pre 4K) TV, but this set by some way (and particularly its natural colour palette) is the best I have ever had.
The Panasonic probably doesn't look quite as 'impressive' in the showroom as the top of the range Samsung TVs and LG OLEDs which have their own specific very high quality 4K demo content, whereas the Panasonic tends to be displayed using a standard 4k Blu-ray, but both the Samsung and LG TVs tend to be demoed with brightness and contrast settings that are far too high for the domestic setting.
By the way, I agree with Tony that the top of the range Samsung, LG, Panasonic (and also Sony) 4K TVs when properly set up are now all 'better' than the best Pioneer and Panasonic plasmas of the past which were the stand out TVs of their day.
I'm still using a Panasonic gt50 plasma and I love the picture. Part of the reason I've always had Panasonic plasmas is their realistic colours. The motion isn't up to today's Led TVs but I still like it.
Can we get back to system pics - there's a Home Theatre section for telly talk ![]()

Just received this 62 in mint condition from a Naim vintage specialist. I needed an extra DIN input and N phono carts
it will join the CB combo, but the 250 will probably go since i'm not totally convinced with it, and i'll swap it with a 140

Roberto
Roberto, did the NAP250 get a full service?
