System Pics 2017
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 17 December 2016
Welcome to System Pics 2017. To get us started here is a picture of my setup: other than longer legs on the rack and some new wires, it's just the same as last year.

Hi Richard,
Yes it just got a recap at LASA, although he did not replaced the big supply caps, since in its opinion were still good. Mr. Lotti also found a sort of mains asymmetry among channels, now totally sorted.
Before servicing, i did at a quick comparison with Nait XS, and prefered the latter. To my ears, the 250 seemed darker, slower with a hint of harsheness on vocals. After recap, it was much better, with very nice vocals and PRAT, a very nice mid bass. The XS was still a little more luminuos, but also leaner and less musical. Definetely the CB combo won by a good margin
Actually the real reason i get rid of it, is that being myself quite OCD, i' m a little disturbed by the presence of little marks, not perfect fascia etc. i'm swapping it for a mint condition 140 from the same 62' s vendor, Oh, for the record before this 250 i already had another 140 in this system and found it very sweet and musical.
Regards
Roberto

Excellent! New name, new system, and S400s return as well. But rather you than me bending down that far to play a CD!
The secret is bending the knees not the back.
How are you? I haven't been asking for fresh news, sorry.

Very elegant, Max. The room with its warm beige and brown tones looks like it was taken straight out of a Woody Allen film.

As much as there is plenty to admire about the look and design of these olden goldies, those two big knobs just don't seem dainty enough. more like an agricultural thing. Like a screw top for a big bottle of sheep dip that you wouldn't think twice about dropping in the recycling plastic bin.

Actually more beige yellow hue than reality, i have been there in a few occasions and it's not so brown-ish :Also the 400s doesn't seem rosewood here .
Btw, very well done Massimo, happy return in the Naim Village ![]()

That's a great looking system and room. Love the rack. Which model is it?

Fortunately we all have different tastes, in style as well as music. Although I don't own any of the classic CB series (apart from an original Nait), I think the CB styling is the finest to come out of Salisbury so far. It seems so timeless. And FWIW I think the large knobs on the NAC62 and Hi-Cap etc. look just the business. ![]()

Max, am I right that you and Ovators did not get on very well in the past? May I ask how organmusic works with a SN1 and Ovators?

Just landed on my desk

Looks like you can see daylight through the drawer of the CDX2!
Yes you can [@mention:1566878603978422], it's the same with mine.

Is that the one with the Robin Hood song on?
No, no, no, not Brian, Ryan!
Little bit different music.....
I played with my dog on the floor and saw the light of the lamp shining through the record...

Must be a CDX2 lite...no mechanism![]()
They are all like that if you look at them from the right angle - the light comes through from the back, between the rear panel and the top of the case.
Haim: Roberto is right, the picture makes everything look like bathed in Maltese sun, but it isn't really so. Anyway, the reference to a Woody Allen film filled me with joy. Thanks.
Stuart: the rack is the Guizu SRW-1A, I'm stacking three just to have a superior shelf to cover and 'finish' the system (I have no special wish to exhibit the Naim 'altar'). I have been using Guizu racks for years, I love them and this solution has the further advantage of completely decoupling each one from the others.
Ardbeg: I bought a pair of brand new S-400s a few years ago, but for still mysterious reasons, I actually couldn't get along well with them: out of the box they were chesty, closed, all sound inside the box, very unpromising. I was told, repeatedly, here, to give them hundreds of hours of run-in, but I didn't simply felt like it. Other than this, I have always admired and praised them. These latest are, to my ears, either featuring a re-designed crossover or are partly run-in already. They still have the two only flaws I find in them: a slightly belly mid bass and a not sufficiently refined upper treble, but I like them and I'm sure this time they will stay. But even if they go, it's none other's business than mine...
Anyway, I'll happily let you know how they play the organ.
CheekyM: just like Nigel said, it's so and it's normal. If you look straight horizontally into the upper slot of the drawer, you see through. I'll only use it at night..
Today I had the SN's logo replaced and the bias accurately regulated. Just like it happened with the 250.2, this simple operation seemed to transform the amp. It's something I suggest. Have the bias checked.
Best to all

It took my Ovators 400 around 3-4 months to settle down. They were ex-demo, but apparently only used during one audio show and one hi-fi magazine review. First weeks were painful... ![]()
Nowadays I find them quite amazing. The only other speakers I've heard which are so 'open and fast' are Quad ESL63s....
I would encourage you to stick to the Ovators. They are a bit akin to a good, but a technically demanding instrument. If played badly or by an inept musician, they will sound mildly annoying to say the least. But once mastered, they reward with wonderful musicality.
Ciao,
Adam
Adam,
as I said, just having the SN's bias regulated seemed to change much. Anyway, I took great care in positioning them and this time (they're my second pair) I am definitely going to be patient, run them in, make the most out of them and keep them. I have always found them beautiful too, and have always publicly declared it.
Ciao
M
