System Pics 2017

Welcome to System Pics 2017. To get us started here is a picture of my setup: other than longer legs on the rack and some new wires, it's just the same as last year.

Another way that I confirmed they need to cross over,I also run Dynaudio XD 600's(active) off my 272 using digital out. There is I certain album I play a lot(Branford Marsalis-Trio Jeepy) to test my set up.At the start of it,sound only comes out of the left speaker, and you need to cross the speaker wires at the back of my 250dr when I use it,in order to get the start of that album coming out of the left speaker, hope that makes sense.

They are definitely reversed, maybe that's why you have been trying to sell the 300.

so I fixed it and noticed on the SL all the blocks face the same except the speaker end of the left channel....it wasn't reverse polarity and I'm still selling my 300 to fund a 500 along with a new spare Powerline that came with my 555PS

I wonder why Naim has there sockets reversed on the amp compared to other mfg's hence why I never bothered to look

It's a throwback to the old pro practice when the amp output sockets were on the front - also a little hint that it's best not to put the electronics between the speakers if possible.

thanks for the tip....due to limitations I forced to run it this way till I move and get a fraim

Indeed. One of the bigger boosts I got in SQ was early on moving my gear from between the speakers to the back wall. Worth the cost of additional NACA5. Gear set between the speakers gets pounded with high-energy bass feedback, but there's often lifestyle and room constraints involved.

Whilst my 500s were away with the DR fettlers, I decided to make up a pair of "Mana" style soundbases to go under my DBLs. The chap who I bought my DBLs from swore by them, but as he was keeping the Manas for his new DBLs (he just changed them for a different finish) he didn't want to sell them with the speakers, but I took several photos and a few measurements before I left. I hadn't gotten round to making these up so the absence of amps gave me the opportunity. The only thing I didn't go with was the baseboard - following advice from a very knowledgeable lady, mine are a sandwich of 12mm marine ply boards with a 3mm sheet of aluminium bonded between. Anyway, now my amps are back where they should be and have settled down a bit, I've concluded these stands are a success. There's a crispness and focus to the sound, some of which I could attribute to the DR effect, but it does seem to mostly come from the support. I suppose I should try the speakers without them but TBH, given the "interesting" time I had getting the blasted things up on the stands,  I can't be bothered!

Hello there, just few words before posting my setup since this is my first post on this forum.

I'm a Music lover from Italy and in terms of hi-fi I've been an "Exposure guy" for the last 20+ years, until I ran into the last relocation and decided that compactness and neatness of installation was a priority.

My first Naim system is therefore based on a Uniti, for CDs and NAS streaming, together with a Stageline to accomodate the signal from my Scottish-flavoured (Systemdek-Syrinx) analog source.

Not pictured are a pair of trusty Epos ES-14, with me for the better part of the last 20 years.

Looking forward to participate actively in these forums and thanks for reading these lines.

ciao

Welcome K,

it's good to see a rather nice Systemdek IV with Syrinx PU3, and what looks like a Heed Orbit?  The Systemdek IV is quite rare and yours looks to be in terrific condition.  Is that the original platter clamp?

Thanks Richard, my Systemdek is basically new despite its venerable age and you're right on both accounts: the PSU is a Heed Orbit (needed some very minor electric work on the turntable) and the clamp is the original one. Unfortunately the spring inside it had to be changed and this required a nasty screw on the top (the shiny thing you saw in the picture). Not elegant, I know, but an original clamp is basically impossible to source and even aftermarket ones are rarely so light (around 100 grams) to fit properly and never as pleasing on the eye.

ciao

Have you now reversed your speaker cables, any percieved difference?

Posted on: 12 April 2017 by greekspec2

yes i did last night and yes a substantial difference and the stereo imaging is correct now......I googled many amplifier brands and Naim is the only one I found reversed...heck even Linn is standard

Posted on: 12 April 2017 by thebigfredc

Yep it's in the Amplifier instruction manual.

In a way it's logical if one looks at it this way:

When installing an amp, one often stands behind an amp. A right channel is then on the right and a left one on the left. That's how I always try to remember it, when dressing the cables

If cables cross or not is just dependednt on where speakers are.

Aspirations are what keep me coming back to this forum - nothing gets the pulse racing as much as TonyM's NBLs (not a euphemism).

My bad - DBLs of course. Tough day at Black Rock.

Oke.. im confused about this..

Why should it matter if you have the speakerconnections reversed ?

It makes no difference from which speaker the part of the sound comes, if its left or right ?

It matters if you want your orchestra to be the right way round. Or you don't want the guitarist standing where the bass player should be. Or Ruth sitting where David normally sits.

As an example, you would probably expect your orchestra to have its violin section on the left as you look at the stage.

Thanks for that. For me that kind of stuff doesn't matter. Just needs to sound good.
