System Pics 2017

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 17 December 2016

Welcome to System Pics 2017. To get us started here is a picture of my setup: other than longer legs on the rack and some new wires, it's just the same as last year.

Now that is one of the best looking, and I can imagine sounding - quality rack support system. Love it !!

It's an interesting challenge with 135s. If your speaker plugs are wired conventionally (as opposite pairs) you have to have the cables approaching from below and above. I lived with that for years, before twisting the inserts round in the naim plug housing.

My dealer made up my Naca5 incorrectly and I had to do the same thing, or like you say, 1-up 1-down.

Slightly different from last years post, added Fraimlite and Flatcap and Circus and Kore on the LP12 and it's all sounding pretty great, possible speaker up grade if funds permit later in the year but just enjoying the music at the moment.

That, may I say, looks very cool. I am a sucker for an all black Fraim which is probably why I own one.

Long may you enjoy the music and fend off the upgraditis!

where did you get the vinyl boxes please?

CD and LP storage boxes from  I Cube who do a series of standard or custom sized boxes (LP boxes were made to measure} and in a range of standard colours or any from the Dulux colour card to match your own decore. Nicely finished and not badly priced

FRAIM installed just before Easter, really added to the whole system - LP12, NDX, 282, HCDR, 200 B&W 805N

I tried my NDX/282/200 stacked in this order for a while, then swapped the 282 (top) with the NDX (second) and the sound seemed to tighten up and improve a bit. Maybe worth a try if you can be bothered...

Also tried the same change (NDS and 252). Somehow Naim streamers don't mind to be below the pre-amps, but NACs definitely like to be on top

I was feeling ill today and had to entertain 4 kids in the late afternoon, so we were creative:

Second System

It's the second system, boxes I use to test things or give a TV proper audio.

CD5i, Nait 5, NacA5, Cardas Interlink, B&W CM5 S2 speakers.

Sounds lovely.

why don't you put the record player on the smaller Fraim a bit further away from the Naim power supplies?

Rack of the year 2017, no contest. It's absolutely lovely.

Are they Lego men? Because if they are, and my little nephew Giacomo sees the pic, his dad's system is doomed.

I love it!

No, Max. These are no ordinary Lego Minifigs. They have supernatural capacities and are alive when the kids are asleep. That's what I tell the kids when I bring them to bed.

Did you ever own a Nait 5? - The original one. I don't think the Nait 5 was received too well in the Naim community and I fail to understand why. Its a beautiful box of tricks which communicates Alfred Brendels interpretation of Mozarts Piano Sonata's well currently despite the fact that he is using an ugly grand piano instead of an piano forte.

Tomorrow I'll connect the Hicap DR to it and I think I'm going to put it on a appropriate Latin / Gregorian 'Graduale'.

Hi,

yes I have owned a Nait 5 (perhaps two...). I loved it because of its gentle, refined and not too edgy sound, a voice I used to define as amber, and because of the clever possibility to set the gain for a certain position of the volume pot. If I had to choose another system than the one one I have now (CDX2-SN), it would be either CD5/Nait5 or CD3.5/Nait3. I know I would miss a lot of what makes Naim great (my last but one system has been CDX2/282/SC/250.2), but a few of their entry levels have been really great products. I think my Naim is the one when things were mostly designed by Roy George.

I wish I could see a pic of your CD5's bottom panel with tenths and tenths of tiny fingerprints...

Best

The NAIT 5 responded very well when I put a flatcap on mine, so I'd be really interested to hear what a Hicap DR can do to it.

Its a heavy little 'bolide' the Hicap. Will the lego people be up to it? Do make sure they read the manual and correctly connect up the SNAICs for direction...

272/250 have replaced ND5/XS-2. Waiting on XPS DR and a second Powerline to arrive.

Posted on: 21 April 2017 by Haim Ronen

Naim's system at AXPONA Chicago:

The name is NAIM

Actually, two systems on a single rack.  The small one, Unities driven by a Nap 100 and the large one consists of 272/250/XPS. Speakers are Proacs D30.

Will be the simple system that will define so much in yonkers years.. Although would sound better on a pile of old Newspapers.

Yes, one of their two rooms. The other one had Valve Amplification with Dynaudio speakers if I remember correctly. I just went in there to say hi to John.

Hi Haim,

I wouldn't have minded visiting Axpona, but I am way too much on the other side of the planet. Tomorrow I'll visit a minor, but with quality gear, audio show in a hotel in Milano, with a good friend. Nothing like the old TopAudio, but I have hopes for a pleasant afternoon. In case, I'll take and post some pictures.

Ciao

Well, Max, you could have invited me.. Wife is out of town. Do you take any of your music to the show?  By the way, I got to meet yesterday Todd Garfinkle, the owner of MA recordings. Had a nice chat with him and purchased one of his new recording which is very difficult (Medieval Europe meets Traditional Chinese meets Avant-darde). Have a good time and don't forget to report.

Thanks Haim. Ken and John usually put together kit that the masses will find interesting. How did the 100 drive those Proacs?

Varyat,

The Nap 100 drove the D30s with ease, producing a dynamic and rich sound  that filled the room properly, and by that I mean loud enough but not ear shattering where anyway the music deconstructs itself. The material though was not too demanding, male voice and a small ensemble of guitar and percussions. My general impression was that the system could play substantially louder than my 30 Watts Nait driving floor standing Proacs 1.5.

I did not stay long enough to hear the larger system though I had previously a chance to listen in their store to the Nap 100 playing with a 272 and a Unity Core through stand mounts Tabellettes 10. That was clearly a winning combination for a small room.

Haim,

thanks for that insight. Well now you know I have to ask about the Tablette 10"s . I am very curious about these speakers and have been looking forward to hearing them- good to know that ProMusica has them on demo. Any chance you could elaborate on your session with them please?

Mark,

I think you are asking the wrong guy for two reasons. First, I am biased. Always liked the Proac sound and that's all we had at home for the last 17 years. Second, I am very easy to please, never believed in splitting audio hairs. So as long as the music flows and sounds fundamentally right I am happy.

I will be brief since we are off topic here. Ken played through the Core a digital recording he had made in Norway of Grieg's first piano concerto. The music through the 10s, the 272 and Nap 100 sounded spectacular, unstrained, fast and very real. We are talking master tape material here so no surprise that it was so impressive. Then we played some of my jazz CDs which sounded a little warmer than I am used to (could be the Nap 100 doings) but that was fine with me. Personally, I liked the 10s very much but you will have to rely on your own ears.
