System Pics 2017

Welcome to System Pics 2017. To get us started here is a picture of my setup: other than longer legs on the rack and some new wires, it's just the same as last year.

Thank you, Richard. The 103 reminds me of the old P77.  Used to put a smile on my face.

Enjoy!

Hi - first post with pics from me (didn't seem to need the photo bucket account, but will see what happens once posted). Thanks to spacey for answers on your system and for asking about mine.

Here is my main system: SU and Kudos S10's; cables are Atlas Hyper and stands are an unknown probably generic local brand but nice welded steel construction (each of the 3 hollow tube legs almost totally filled with dry sand; did not weigh afterward). Main sources are UPnP from Synology (in basement), Tidal streaming (router beside acting as a wifi bridge), internet radio, and Mac mini for various via TOSlink (Roon trial coming to a close). Lots of fun, but hoping to move toward a Nova once available.

Regards alan

ps - art and wall things on list, our "new house" isn't so new but haven't done much in that line so far..huge lively room...

Nice!!, always thought the S10s look the business, a fine speaker (and amp OBVS) in a cool room!!

anything planned furniture wise etc? you not afraid of the amp getting knocked that close to the floor?

Thanks! My partner and I moved in together two years past, combining houses for this new and spectacular (to us) place. Open concept, high ceilings, nice hand-finished hardwood floors, all mod cons. Fresh start. The furnished living room part is right beside the previous photos, with a small access path to the sliding patio door - it's not really the empty shell it appears (or that was my own previous place haha), and the dining room and kitchen are adjacent. The small (IKEA table legs) shelf is set back, the amp isn't too exposed, and it's almost always just adults and no pets... but it did work a lot better for the Qute than the SU, which is (just) too wide for the higher shelf. We added the carpet as a test (it's a very echo-y room) and are slowly shopping for new furnishings that will be "ours" (rather than "his" or "hers", if you get me).

Regards alan

The arm is my trusty Aro.  The cartridge is an ESCo tipped Denon DL-103.

Richard,

You ought to get your Royal N back.

Posted on: 20 June 2017 by Richard Dane

Kuma, I have a new Ortofon SPU Royal standing by.  Only problem I have found with the SPU is that it can sometimes mis-track slightly on a couple of very high level 45rpm cuts I own.  Extra downforce don't help and then I fear it will just start ploughing through the vinyl.

Is the arm board adjustable on that Loricraft? The Royal N has rather a long reach from bolt line to stylus, the stock Aro mounting distance can't be helping. Do you have a sKale? With all the plates it might help get the mass up a bit, though it's a b*gger to adjust finely enough and finish with the O rings central in their grooves (as they must be if you're to get the best out of it).

Posted on: 20 June 2017 by Richard Dane

Yeti,

yes, the arm board was made by Nigel to provide a degree of adjustment with the Aro while staying true to the arm's design principles.

No Skale on the Aro.  I've witnessed first hand the precision and care that goes into the build of the Aro and the time it takes honing by hand each counterweight to ensure they are a perfect fit - indeed the heavy counterweight I'm using was carefully honed by my own hand for this Aro, so it stays.

Pah!

I would give  up a few mistracking and save the colorful Royal N over Goody two-shoes Denon!

Here's the SL2s acquired recently, plus the electronics (the lighting on the speakers is a bit unequal. (Through the door and in the distance in the kitchen is the Must QB!) I thought the SL2s were relatively straightforward to set up - a bit fiddly and required a careful and methodical approach (but easier than the SBLs!). The one problem I found was that the bottom units wouldn't sit properly until I cut some slots in the carpet. Once I did that the leaf spring seemed to function as described. However, having done that it's not at all straightforward to fiddle around further with placement. They do sound excellent - most obviously in the treble compared to the SBLs - but the mid-band and lower frequencies are also very clear and well defined.

The main issue with the system and the shelves is that while it's nice and compact, there's not the height to dress the cables properly. The Supercap is under the CDS3 and the XPS2 under the Supercap to help with this but it doesn't really.

It's looking very nice. If you're worried about dressing the Burndy cables, particularly trying to keep them off the floor, I've found short lengths (~1.5") of pipe lagging slipped around the cable works very well. It's also very easy to move along the cable length.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I've got the HMS 1.1 which have 3 columns, 2 at the rear and a one at the front. I haven't tried sand mainly because I could never get assurances that it could be delivered totally dry and I didn't fancy the faff of drying it all out in an oven so, the atabites have done the job.

I got a 50 kg bag of extra-dry "multi purpose" sand at the local hardware / building supply place and used a small garden trowel to slowly add the filling to each of the tree columns per stand. I asked the sales guy (this local store uses semi-retired experts / former tradesmen on staff, so usually they have good knowledge and answers) for the driest stuff... and he pointed me away from the "dry sand" to the "multi purpose" mix as being both finer and drier. It was about $5 or $10 so a low risk trial, but worked exactly as advertised. Altogether I used about half the bag, I guess.

Regards alan

Thanks Alan, that is useful to know as a possible option should I ever need to fill another pair of stands. Apologies for the very late reply, I must have failed to press send when I originally wrote back!

Considering whether a black fluted Stiletto might be a bit too much black

Posted on: 25 June 2017 by varyat

Well that all depends on which color the 707's will be !

The fluted Stiletto is a stunner ,imo..

But then it wouldn't be a fruit box anymore. I love my Klimax LP12 but wouldn't part with the wooden plinth - let alone for something called a Stiletto! Went as far as a Tranquility but that's Tiger Paw.

I briefly considered the Booplinth but it looks too much like a wooden chopping block from a purveyor of Swedish home furnishings

Didn't Linn toy with a CNC milled plinth a few years back?

RE: Woodsong Plinths

Maybe Sondekk just wants to be free and post something different.

I just think that's an absolutely beautiful plinth that you made there. I think the fluted wooden finish plinths are the epitome of classic Sondek style, but that ebony one looks so good that I can forgive it for not having flutes. A candidate for best looking deck ever, to my taste.

I think this is my favourite CH plinth so far...

Maybe not what you want to hear, Chris, but I can assure you that the Stiletto looks stunning, as if it were made by Naim, and sounds stunning.

Just appears to be a Perfectly Balanced System!

How far off am I?  50%, 30%, 10%

6 Black Boxes + Radical & TT

 552/555 PS vs 252/SCDR

Although not as impressive as some of the other setups you guys have, still very enjoyable and makes my feet tap. Source is a nuc pc running Roon and hiface USB->spdif into nDac. Long term goal is to

1) put an XPS-DR on the dac

2) replace nDac with 272 (if that unit still exist at that time)

3) replace the Nait-XS with a NAP250dr

Posted on: 26 June 2017 by Mario

Hey Chris, is that a medium height fraim above your CDS3? I was hoping to do this in order to get my 552 on top but was not sure if the lid would fully open on the CDS3. Don't want to make it harder to play this wonderful machine, my fully naimed LP12 already deters me from playing CD's.

Cheers,

Mario.
