System Pics 2017

Welcome to System Pics 2017. To get us started here is a picture of my setup: other than longer legs on the rack and some new wires, it's just the same as last year.

Maybe not gravitational wave but you might detect the next North Korean test or the next “big one”.

I’m curious as to whether wattle and daub makes for any damp problems? My 1932 brick and cinderblock did when the damp course failed. I had a fair few albums with mold contamination (those with paper inner sleeves) by the time I worked out what was going on. Replacing the membrane piecemeal did give me the opportunity to move an inconvenient doorway.

Gravitational waves? Yes, loads round here, see 'em most days.

We've had a few damp problems over the years, but not often with the wattle and daub - having no foundations is a bit of an issue, as is water creeping down chimneys. The shelf you see to the left of the right speaker used to contain some of my LPs but, alas, a leak developed in the wall above, water ran off the beam going across, and dripped onto the covers. I sometimes crave a modern bungalow...

So here was the problem with the wall mentioned above - the rendering had become porous. Some of the hazel sticks had gone a bit spongy as a result (shotty materials - surely it's not too much to expect them to last 450 years?), so we got the builder to remove this section of wattle and daub, & replace it with modern insulation.

What did you do to deal with the effects of the low ceiling ? Very nice setup.

He bought more Fraim stacks when the first one hit the ceiling!

How did you guess?

With the 555 CD player on top, it became inconvenient to load.

Hi Bert, I wouldn't consider my ceiling particularly low, and certainly not for an old cottage. The room's remarkably benign acoustically - put it down to the mud, dung, straw, and hazel sticks that make up the walls.

Hi Tonym,

What's the height of your room ?

My basement rooms are 235 cm and the acoustics is pretty good with nSats, i was thinking to move a pair of Ovator there but i'm a little reluctant for this.

Regards

Roberto

Is that a mummified cat's head ( between the staves on the right about two thirds of the way up)?

Thanks for the picture, I will get in touch with Proac on Monday.

Had a pair for 10 days now and very impressed with them at a low volume, compared to PMC 20.21, and they seem to be getting better as they get used. I like, to me anyway, the more balanced treble and bass and of course the fact they can be close to a rear wall.

What is the stand for the electronics you are using Spacey? It has a tres cool retro look about it that I really like.

And that photo of the SU by itself on the shelf looks like it came right out of an ad. Very nice overall system and room presentation.

And I like the rug too!

Thanks! It’s from made.com, most the stuff is, or habitat and dwell, rugs from rugs direct IIRC

Me again! I’d intially sold off of most of my original system and downsized to the Atom which over a period of time began to regret. Back to SN2 for a second and last time. For now I use the Atom in a second system and have swapped my twenty5.21 for the ProAc Tablette 10s.

Cant quite put my finger on what I began not to like about the PMCs, but in this room Proac’s are a revelation and possibly the best speakers I’ve owned. My future and final upgrade will be a phono stage and possibly a DAC.

Rega RP8- Ania- Fono MC

Supernait 2

Chord Mojo - SotM SMS-200

ProAc Tablette 10 (Oak)

Nice set up and pics but why with such a powerfull amp and very good TT you have such small speakers? You can get floorstanders with the same height (speaker+stand) with decent bass quality and quantity!

Robiwan I use my Proac Tab 10 on the end of a 250 in my room no problem with bass, these speakers are a delight to listen too and if you haven't done so already go and listen to a pair you may be surprised.

okay but their size makes them unable to produce good full bass, sorry that's the way it is.

When I started looking for speakers, I had a budget of roughly £2K with a requirement to work near a wall. In this room with furnishings, decor etc I tried several speakers on demo from compact floorstanders to bookshelves. I was even prepared to stretch myself to a pair of Twenty5.23 floorstanders , before then settling on twenty5.21. Eventually grew to dislike them particularly with low level listening.

Cut a long story short, i usually bring lunch from home to work, on this occasion i didn't so went out instead and stumbled across a Proac dealer very close to where I work.

Arranged a long home demo and voila'!

As hifiman stated, they produce excellent sound and bass. More importantly they work perfectly in my room.

I'm on the same path going from the D2's to the Tablette 10's. I was thinking about downgrading from Supernait 2 to Nait 5si, but I had a feeling that I might regret it. What was with the Atom that you thought were missing compared to the Supernait?

Apologies seen this late.

I’d definitely hold on to the SN2 as they work brilliantly with the Proac’s.

Compared with the Atom, the SN2 has a bigger, deeper refined soundstage and much more intricate detail. The key difference for myself was the SN2 has better control of the speakers particularly at low volume. I do miss the convenience and features of the Atom, but SQ is key.

Thank you! The stands are my own designed alternative based on Custom Designs SQ404. I sent them a detailed CAD drawings with the following spec:

6mm acoustic top plate, 12mm laser cut base plate with 20mm radius corners, overall 545mm tall without spikes, and the 50x50mm columns are each filled 2.15kg of Custom Design filler. All bead blasted before powder coating. The spikes are nickel plated with knurled locking nuts on aluminium floor protectors, also supplied by Custom Design. All came flat packed in 3 well packed boxes. each stand weights 25kg.

my new (but ex dem/preloved components) system coming together, just needs cables and setting up ready for listening

Posted on: 25 November 2017 by hungryhalibut

That will be great once it’s all set up. If you can manage two racks side by side it would be much better. You will struggle with five burndies in a single tall stack.

Posted on: 25 November 2017 by ct

Mmm, I (perhaps stupidly) hadn't realised it was going to be quite so difficult to dress in such a way as to keep the cables off the floor, away from walls and each other using a single stack so am currently waiting for an extra shelf with spikes to come so that I can split them and do that. I should have done this in the first place but at least this way SWMBO will see our living space being invaded little by little.....

...I'm sure there will be many more tweaks to come and am looking forward to playing with the setup, as well as plenty of music
