System Pics 2017

Welcome to System Pics 2017. To get us started here is a picture of my setup: other than longer legs on the rack and some new wires, it's just the same as last year.

I dunno Chris. It looks like a pretty cosy room to groove in to me. The oak 23s are absolutely the right colour for that room.

Thanks FZ, I still feel a little inadequate sometimes though

Do you have an ETA for your replacement PMC's yet? Hopefully must be very soon....

Two Ways

Two Ways I cannot find enough words of praise for the seventeen years old Proac Response 1.5 which never fail to be articulate without loosing their rich dynamics, always remaining faithful to the source and room acoustics in their own elegant way.

This is my system in December 2016.

Changes since last year saw addition of the XPS DR and the PMC Twenty5.23's.

My system isn't too shabby, but I'm in awe of some of the posts in this thread, some really great looking rooms and systems.

Three boxes are quite enough. It's looking very nice indeed.

Any day now. I've seen pics of them at the dealers. PMC put a 23 box inside a 26 box and put the spikes and such in a seperate carton instead of resting in the foam padding. Apparently they've taken the packing to an artform.

Whats the unit your system sits on?

Hi Simon, I've heard the Hugo before, but not in my system - Steve J has been using his for a while and has always been most impressed. It certainly sounded excellent there. Steve also tried the 2Qute but much preferred the Hugo. Interesting what you mention re. the Hugo's USB input. Feeding it direct from the Melco definitely causes the sound quality to drop.

The Powerline's on the QBD. Many thanks to Nick From Suffolk for the loan! He's a jolly good sort.

I'm inclined to borrow the TT from our mutual dealer although IIRC Simon, you preferred your Hugo.

Hi Tony, the Hugo TT and Standard Hugo via SPDIF sound almost identical ( I don't use USB so I find your comment regarding Melco USB interesting)  ... with the TT having an everso slightly more dominant lower mid sound... not much to choose, and I guess I was familiar with the standard Hugo's slightly more spritely sound that perhaps better matched my room/system... either way they are both incredible devices. If all things SQ were equal then the TT does have advantages  of  better USB noise filtering, looks more the part on a rack and has a remote so could be used as a digital only preamp for a Naim amp ... I have heard very positive reports of this last item from our mutual dealer.

As someone who had had Hugo, 2Qute...back to Hugo...and now TT (direct into 250DR), I concur with this but would add that the 2Qute was not a patch on the Hugo with SPDIF ime.

500DR upgrade is the biggest change to my system for 2016.  Also enjoying the Super Lumina interconnect as well.  552 goes in for DR/Rebuild in February.  Kudos Titan's continue to shine and I am a big proponent of Vicoustic room treatments.

Chris Bell - can you please stop posting those beautiful pictures?

Wonderful view. Wonderful system.

Top marks!

Whilst I love and appreciate everybody's posts on this part of the forum, this remains my favourite system, room and setting. Quite stunning.

Dear all,

First of all, Happy Holiday Season to all of you!  So many permutations of great looking systems, this is absolutely great, in addition to giving me a few excellent upgrade ideas. Here is an iphone snapshot of my sub-optimally set up system consisting of UQ-Hugo TT-Uniti-n-Sats (cabling: PL on UQ, DC1 to Hugo tt and an average rca interconnect that was laying around - having made  the naive mistake of ordering a Chord Shawline RCA to 5 pin Din assuming the Uniti could accommodate the configuration. Due to a temporary constraint - lack of long enough cables I am obliged to have the speakers really close together - but the system still sounds bloody excellent. Cannot wait to welcome a NAP 250DR along with a run of longer A5 or Tellurium (10m).

All the best,

Vik

Good to hear FZ. Please give us an update when the replacements have run in a bit.

Don't you just love happy endings!

Hi Vik,

piano blacks were my first pair of N-Sats, and I still remember them fondly, besides believing that they were the best sounding of my five pairs. They will love a 250, mine do - although mine is a 250.2. I also have TQ black speaker cables, and they work very well between 250 and Sats. I am sure your system looks chromatically very elegant and coherent, couldn't you try a few more pics with a better perspective? Also, must the rack be placed in that position only, forcing you to use 10 mt of cable?

Chris certainly look the part, and you suggest  it you have it sounding the part as well despite all that glass.. however there is one thing that is bugging the engineering part of me...

Your ceiling slopes up to the front window wall, it appears you have a curtain runner along the edge window rising to the front window wall. Therefore your curtains will need to of a varying length. How do you manage it when the curtains are open and pulled back to the lower ceiling height that curtains don't lay on the floor .. perhaps you use some sort of venetian blind suspension system as well as a curtain slide? Please tell

I'm beginning to think a Hugo fed direct from the new Uniti Core's SPDIF output will be a very neat little combination, and chances are it'll sound terrific.

Hi Max,

Actually, your posts on the N-Sats topic were partly responsible for my seeking out and purchasing this mint pair of piano black N-Sats, so Thank you very much! You may still come across a pair. I have no doubt the speakers will work really well with the contorol that the NAP 250DR would bring on. Are you not tempted to try the DR version yourself?

As for the photos, I took a couple but shooting against the light in the morning sun does not improve things much even with my digital camera. (apologies for the poor image quality). We live in a narrow footprint villa and the open plan living/dining and kitchen do not affort for a lot of play in the positioning of the rack. My plan is to move the left speaker to the other side of the window/door frame (I need 10 meters of cable to trace the cable over the frame - the builders had installed very narrow conduits and it is virtually impossible to pull through a good quality cable). By the way, is the TQB appreciably narrower than the A5?  An alternative would be to leave the rack where it is (location of the mains spur) but place the speakers along the wall at 90° - thus I may use shorter cables, but this will restrict the passage in the dining/living room considerably....this hobby is creating a lot of creative tension at home sometimes We shall see....in the new year

Best, Vik

İ hope it is a photo shop view

enjoy the view, room and naims with that order, and your photo skills are far but very far better that my iphone pictures! Congratulations!

a question? The effects of glass surrondings on sound?  İ will move my system to a modest loft soon which got a big glass near like you setup, i was wondering if there might be an effect of that

I'm betting it sounds as good as it looks - the most spectacular room on the thread each year.My hope is that if I live a good life, that when I die I will go to this room.

And Simon's question is very intriguing as well!

Vicoustic room treatments and bass traps to help control the reflections in the room.  I get a big involving sound with no tension, brightness or fatigue.   I can't say enough good things about Vicoustic and their products... highly recommended.
