NDS Stops playing
Posted by: Dustysox on 17 December 2016
Hi all,
Before I send my NDS to Naim i wanted to "pick" your fine brains!
My NDS recently "acquired" a wee problem in that it stops playing from Asset Vers 5. I have a Mac Mini with an external hard drive connected to it. In the last 4/5 days the NDS stops playing the music.
I still have my old Logitech Transporter which uses Logitech Media server which doesn't seem to suffer the same problem i.e. connecting the external hard drive on the Mac Mini and playing music.
I have rebooted (i'll whisper this bit...!) BT Hub 5 router. This didn't solve it. I then carried out a full factory reset of the router, this did not solve it. I swapped ethernet cables..this did not solve it. What is strange is that switching NDS to radio station it does not suffer the same problem. So, with my detective hat on I can only conclude that either the Mac Mini and or Asset are my problem. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Asset and this has not effect. I ran a check on drives in Disk Utility last night which did find some errors and corrected them. This has made the Mac Mini a bit more snappy! I am going to reload Miniserver to see what results that brings.
When I open Naim app it does seem slow to find UPnP.
I have unplugged ethernet cable to NDS and now running NDS in wireless mode to rule out ethernet connection on NDS.
Before you all shout get a Uniti Core, can any one suggest what i can do next? I'm running out of ideas.
No word from Dusty. Hopefully he's lost in music!
Hi gents,
Thank you for your interest! Ruddy work keeps getting in the way and i turned in early last night as I had an early start this morning.
When I came down......drum roll I checked with the Naim app and the music had stopped...groan! Although i am unsure whether the Qnap powers down etc and therefore stopping play...although i doubt it. I will check further this evening. If the music does stop then it's either the router or NDS. My initial suspicions of the NDS having a problem seem to be coming true...groan!!
Having said this, i m very happy with the Qnap and it's still very much early days with a learning curve underway.I'm also pleased to now have a "robust" back procedure in place.
More to follow!!
Before you finally take the NDS in to your dealer, it would be worth doing a factory reset because I have known that fix strange faults on streamers and it doesn't take very long to do......

Oh dear.
Good suggestion from David there.
I still think it's your network but maybe that's just wistful?
Good luck with it.
I'm following this story with great interest.
I've a wired ND5 XS as part of my main hi-fi setup, a wireless Mu-so Qb and 3 SONOS things (Connect wired, Plays are wireless). Over the last 10 years, the SONOS never stopped playing or dropped out. Note that I'm listening at least 8h/day to streaming audio (internet radio, ripped cds on a NAS).
I own the ND5 since 1,5y, the Mu-so since 6 months. Using iRadio, the ND5 nor the Mu-so ever stopped playing.
Using UPnP is another story... I'm facing approx 2-3 "Stopped" playing situations at random in a week time.
As already mentioned here above; there's indeed more than just the Naim gear. It is also the router/switch, NAS etc.
Over the last 10 years, I'm on my second Lacie NAS (Cloudbox 2TB - 159€). The thing is pretty basic, not powerful at all, but it is dedicated to stream music to the SONOS and/or Naims; something that works pretty well. No - it is not fault tolerant, but as I'm in IT, I've 4 copies of my music collection by "a click on a button" on different machines, on different locations, so this would be sufficient
However, my wireless router, a Netgear WGR614v9, nearly 10 years old, and also pretty basic (39€), is in my opinion the weak piece in the chain. I don't suffer from the "Stopped" experience when my children are not connected to the Netgear to watch Youtube movies. It all started with the fact that the "Stopped" behaviour only showed up 1) in the evening & 2) during the weekend. Never during the day when I was the only one at home. 1) & 2) are the timeframes my children make extensive use of the router and demand high volume and hight throughput.
I'm thinking on redesigning my network infrastructure at home, so I can live with it for now, but I'm quite convinced it is the router.
But having said that, on the same router, the SONOS never dropped out. ;-)

Dusty, oh dear... so if you use that other switch you mention and connect the NDS and QNAP to it, and connect that switch back to the router.... and it still stops without the QNAP going to sleep, then it does indeed look like your NDS.
Simon
Can't you just "lend" the NDS to your dealer and see if they have the same trouble? If they do then it's straight off to Salisbury.

Hi David,
Thank you for your advice. It was one of the first things I did, and reseting the Naim app. My apoligies as I don't think i mentioned this.

Hi Kurt,
Thank you.
I hope my journey helps. We sure are in good company with so many helpful people. With added bonus of an education albeit a little frustrating as well!!

Hi Simon,
I did speak with Steven @ Naim today and he was most helpful. I am going to try plugging USB stick loaded with music to see what results that brings. This will bypass any network connections. This will prove.....something!!! I also need to further investigate try iradio to see if that stops.
I will further with switch, cables etc as I'm not entirely convinced that its the NDS...
.......when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth!!!!
More to follow....!!
Well, that is interesting. I plugged in memory stick with music loaded went to have my dinner whilst it was on repeat. I heard the first track briefly and when I went back in 20mins later.....drum roll.......music had stopped.
I am now listening again to see if it cuts out again. If it does....Salisbury beckons in the New Year.
Update,
Yes I can confirm music has stopped. The NDS says input initialising and then switches to whats on the USB.
Inspector Dusty - I suspect you have proved it and yes Salisbury beckons by the sounds of it. At least no one can I cause of being hasty and trying most options
S
Dusty - sorry to hear that NDS has to go back for some spa treatment.
I think I found a silver lining to the whole episode though - at least you know your network is up to scratch and now you have a very good NAS from which to stream.
A small consolation - my first NDS refused to play anything BUT 192 kHZ / 24 bit. It was promptly replaced with a new one of course.
Thank you Simon,
I have learnt a lot from all this. I'm not sure i'm completely out of the woods...maybe a step in the right direction.
I'm happy to have a more robust set up with the Qnap. I would of been devastated if i had had a problem with my ripped music. I ain't doing all that again...life's too short...I would of brought a turntable!!!! Just to add, i do have my music backed up another external hard drive.
I may research routers as well. I'm not sure of the age of the Hub 5, a new one would certainly keeps things up to date.
By way of a thank you, and because my Christmas looks to be quiet I am offering to come around your houses over the festive season...to enjoy your music to help me get over my silence.....no need to thank me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reading this thread quickly -- has anybody suggested toggling the Sleep settings at the Mac OS level, and, if applicable, the Asset app level?
Sometimes a preference gets wonky.
Nick
Sorry to hear this. Hope you can get it sorted out without too much inconvenience.
Lousy timing.
Hi Darren
Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your NDS.
Firstly, I'm very happy to have a play with it here for you to see if it is indeed the issue though I somewhat doubt it but would help to eliminate it once and for all.
I was down at the factory last week demonstrating a Statement to one of my customers and Jason just happened to comment that Naim have had lost of issues where customers use a BT Hub. Routers are as cheap as chips these days. We and Naim recommend Draytek.
Call me if you'd like my assistance. Otherwise have a great Christmas.
Regards
Simon

Really sorry to hear of your woes. Especially since I have been suffering the exact same thing. I replaced my switch (netgear gs105) which sits between my mac mini server (Asset and minim software) and my qute 2.
It all started with radio 4 dropping out then coming back up. Heard lots people moaning about this so left well alone.
Then streaming started to just stop. No input initializing, music just stops.
Completely rebuilt my server with win 10, assett and minim. Still does it.
Just ripped all my cables out and replaced. Even removed a wifi switch for a lamp at the side of the hifi.
Listening with bated breath. What a time for things to go wrong. I dont mind the time I just NEED my music.
Hope it all works out for you.
Morning all.
Just to update-
The NDS this morning on it's display shows" Fault 35, DSPDAC Reg4(W) Fail".I have no idea what the means..i think the technical term is "buggered"!!
This is strange as I have not used the NDS at all over the festive period due to all problems documented above.
O well.....more silence for Dusty!!

Simon,
Not sure if you have read all my prior posts but prior to this morning I think we had ruled out the router. I do have a Draytek hidden somewhere and if i can remember how to configure for BT Fibre (anyone help????!!) then I will certainly give it a try. I did point out to Steven at Naim I was using a Hub 5 and he mentioned that they have always been pretty reliant. Suffice to say I have renewed my broadband/phone package with BT and they are also sending me a new/latest router. I will try this and see what results it brings.

Good morning Jondhall, do you have any further developments?
I had a very odd situation with my NDX.
It had been working faultlessly for years. Mine was the 24/96 version.
I had the NDX board upgraded to the 24/192 version. I removed the NDX, took it to the dealer who upgraded it while I waited. When put back into the same system I immediately experienced dropouts etc.
As nothing had changed I suspected the upgrade had a fault but discovered that bypassing the Netgear GS105E (unmanaged) resolved the problem despite it being OK some hours earlier and was OK with my Smart TV which it also feeds.
I replaced the switch with a GS105E (managed version) and all has been well since.
Still haven't got a clue why this happened!

Dusty,
This is now beyond our ability to help.If your NDS is showing a fault 36 error code then this is likely to be an incorrect report as a result of a software timing issue in the early NDS software - please contact support@naimaudio.com for further information.
Good luck,
Adam

Well, Gutted. No change at all. Tried the USB as suggested to OP and that stops too. So its the Qute :-(
Sorry to hear this Dusty. I suppose the way is now clear since the NDS fessed up, but I feel your pain.
Let's hope for a fast resolution.

It's worth trying a factory reset of your Qute before you send it off to Salisbury because that does sometimes fix odd behaviour. You do it with the remote, via the spanner/wrench key.
