Streaming Issues with Iomega HMND

Posted by: MyronB on 22 December 2016

I have all my music stored on an Iomega NAS in FLAC format, and recently have been unable to pick up the Albums on my NaimUnit directly or via the app on iPad. The problem seems to be random,  some albums are not visible at all, others only display a single track or two tracks.  Have rebooted the NAS several times, but problem still persists.  Any ideas before I chuck it and buy a Synology or QNAP?  Its Xmas and I can't play my tracks any more.

Hi,

Do you have a music server installed on your Iomega NAS, and if so, which one?

Does the server have a re-indexing option? If so, then give this a go. Depending upon the server, this may take some time.

Hi

Yes it does have a Media Server although the manual does not specify which product.  It is set to scan on a regular basis, but when I attempt a forced re scan it can take all day w/o completing the task.  I have added 3 new music folders to it and although visible in the Iomega files, they cannot be seen by the Uniti..  I have found that there is a factory reset option on the Iomega that does not delete any data so will try that again.  Has worked well over 3 to 4 years so not sure what is going wrong.  The Uniti also intermittently displays the error message "Error unable to read source" when accessing the Iomega, which is connected via Ethernet cable, not WiFi

I have a dozen or so albums on my Macbook and using Asset UPNP experience no issues, instant access across WiFi network, so the problem lies with the Iomega

Thanks

Hi Myron -

I had Iomega as my first toe in the NAS pond. It ran twonky as the media server and I ended up learning more about controlling that from web searching than from the Iomega control panel.

Mine were low end  consumer units and I had some fun updating software and disks and learning about their limited Linux install. I bought a second one on sale, but was then in possession of units at end of life with no further updates to firmware or OS. They worked ok but not great, and that's about all I can say

Limped along for a while, but in the end, everything got too tired and flaked out and both are now unplugged awaiting any kind of attention from me...probably just to recover the replacement WD Red discs I installed myself and put them into something else...

Likely yours is newer and better, but if you can, see if you can point your web browser to the Twonky service port (sorry can't recall the number) and double check that your new folders are properly included in the search path and that a local scan can complete without error. Similarly, if a firmware or OS update is available (the Iomega forum is pretty good and service techs offer help there), look into that. If not and funds allow, I've had infinitely better performance from the small Synology I bought to replace the Iomega.

Best wishes.

Regards alan

Alan

Thanks for the note,  will try that  but as a back up for the Xmas period I have ordered a Synology DS216 2x3tb, delivery tomorrow, hopefully will resolve the issues.

regards

Myron

Myron,

I am sure the Synology NAS will be better. I have the Synology DS216+II myself as my music NAS and the Synology Ds216 as a NAS for my photos & home videos.

Probably best to start with Synology's own media server. It's pretty good & very easy to set up. The only problem I find with it is it's inability to display album art efficiently. I now use minimserver as my media server - also now bundled with your Synology NAS (along with Java which also requires to be installed in order to run minimserver) but trickier to set up & configure. It is much quicker to re-index than Synology's own media server & displays artwork very much more efficiently. It's also better for transcoding from FLAC to WAV if that's of interest to you, but I now use it specifically because of its much better efficiency with covert art display.

Good luck.
