in anticipation of Fraim just ordered...

Posted by: Wunderbaum on 23 December 2016

Hi All - just wanted to share my excitement regarding the base + 3 shelves full fraim just ordered. It will replace my (hmm hmm) Ikea 50£ "rack" that is currently hosting my Naim gear.

Having followed some posts about Fraim stacking order, just want to run my plan by you for further advice.

As mentioned, it will be 1 x base and 3 additional standard levels. i know that two stacks might have been even better, but for now this is how it’s going to be. Furthermore the normal height levels were chosen for purely aesthetic reasons as i really like the compressed look of classic separates in a standard height fraim rack - even though some more air and separation might be beneficial to the overall sound.

my plan is to stack as this: Top level : NDX, 3rd level: 282, 2nd level: 250, bottom level/base : Napsc and Hicap DR

merry chrismas all!!

Morten, just a thought, I find the NACs sound best top of Fraim if you can manage it. You might want to experiment swapping the 282 and NDX so that pre is nice and in the clear. For reference, I have my 252 on the top and in the clear and I am sure it sounds better for it, even if it's a case of just easier / better cable dressing.

S

sure  - will experiment with either the NDX or the 282 on top as there has been a few suggestions to swap the two..

What is the problem with Fraim and earthquake prone areas?  it may collapse? Which is your rack choice for such  situations?

While the multiple decoupleing of levels works great for also reducing energy transmitted and thus minimusing vibration, at does create a potential tower of glass death if you live somewhere prone to frequent strong jolts. If you want to tempt your 250 to become a canonball, I can't think of many better ways that sticking it on a Fraim when you live on the 30th floor of the greater Tokyo area. Anything with decoupled layers (including standmount speakers) are really asking for trouble.

Although very keen on the Fraim, it took me about 10 seconds to realise that it causing a major misshap would simply be a matter of when, not if.

I compromised with the good ol' Quadraspire Evo placed on Krypton spike shoes. No, it is not in the same league as Fraim, but I've not come across a better non shelf decoupled rack yet. Plus they look great in my room.

I still aspire to Fraim but safety first.

I wonder how a Townshend seismic stand would perform.

It's an interesting design. But ultimately relies on non fixed decoupled levels. Though the uprights are not fully decoupled in the same way Fraim is, I wouldn't risk it. Plus the Townshend would look truly awful in my room.

I find ugly hifi can be largely overlooked providing the rack is a nice piece of furniture and the top shelf is not used for hifi.

Hi All - just a quick update for everyone - allthough originally estimated to be delivered this week, the Fraim order has been pushed back to (mid/end) next week (supposed to leave naim on monday, 16th) - so no updates on the project yet;-)

I ordered a standard height shelf a few days before you and have a quoted date of the 31st of Jan.

Wunderbaum, are you assembling the Fraim or getting your dealer to do it? Great though Fraim is, it's not child's play to assemble it so it sounds optimum. If you are doing yourself then when you put pressure on the Allen key to tighten the bolts, just put a bit extra pressure than hand tight... the Allen key shouldn't let you over tighten before bending as it is/was made from a soft alloy... then ensure the spikes are centred in their cups between levels.. at least not touching the cup walls.... other than that enjoy

oh yes one of those fancy flat dusters on a stick helps keep it clean.......

Simon,

I recall you showed pictures of the duster several years ago, but can you remind me the name of the manufacturer or where you bought it? I think I ought to get one after all these years - when a low sun shines and I have the curtains open the sight of the dust between the shelves and the glass is rather depressing!

Thanks, CB

You can get the duster from Lakeland

I use this. It comes with a handy extender and seems to reach most crevices around my Fraim. Available  from most high street shops.

Thanks, trickydickie. I have to go into town later, so will go into Lakeland and see what I can find. Could be costly though as my wife seems to find things in that shop that we never knew we needed.

Clive - like when you take your wife with you to your dealer and she has to "accept" that you need another £4000 PSU to a hifi-thingy that has its own PSU anyway...;-)

Especially when she realises that it'll need an additional shelf to support it too!

The dusters come in a packet of 2, the larger one is for cleaning under white goods.

Maybe you could gift the larger one to your wife.

Well perhaps not......

Cleaning under white goods? Now that's OCD

My Fraim order was made aroud the same time as the OP's but I'm in no hurry for its installation while my amp is having some HQ tlc

OK, I got a set of these things from Lakeland as discussed and have been dusting away merrily since getting home! They are called Flatmate dusters and it's like they were designed by Naim Audio since they fit perfectly between the wooden shelves and the glass as well as between most components and the glass. They don't, however, fit under a Klimax Radikal box. The yellow one reaches easily to the back of the third leg on the Fraim and even reveals what the spiders have been up to under my NBLs. Recommended.

Here you go. Bought mine from Lakeland. I use the blue one for my system, Works a treat for getting under the boxes.

Another update - the promised delivery date (yesterday) has come and gone - and i suspect Yetis42's comment above jinx'ed my order. Got a mail from the distributor late yesterday that my order was postponed to "beginning of February" the reason being that the wood ordered for my order (and others) failed quality control and had to be scrapped altogether - so back to the beginning of the Que...

well - more time to anticipate i suppose...

Similar happened when I first ordered Fraim (Lite) except the uprights were rejected by Naim, it was quite some time before I took delivery. Better than the alternative though.

I'm still waiting for my Core too, 2 months 8 days and counting, I've even seen a pile of them in the factory.

...unfortunately not - not sure if Yeti42 got his yet - was planning to reach out to my dealer today (as it is - technically - "the beginning of February") but i just did not get round to it...

Will update as soon as i know more...

Mine is with my dealer now, but diverse prior commitments on both sides mean that the installation will be deferred a little.

Back to dusters . . . we use something like that too.  My first instinct was the vacuum cleaner, but really a duster works much much better.

Still have all my ball bearings, but the little sticky Naim logo has been damaged.  I need to write to see if I can get one of those.
