272/555 vs xps

Posted by: intothevoid on 24 December 2016

I've posted elsewhere that replacing the XPS-DR with a 555-DR didn't make much difference and, by implication, wasn't a very VFM upgrade.

well I'll be the first to admit eating humble pie is not so distasteful. How wrong was I??

recently, after an extended listening session, I realised that I was playing much louder with the 555 in place compared with the XPS. The noise floor is so much lower that I comfortably play at 40 whereas 30-33 was normal. 50 is not unrealistic but it is REALLY loud.

oh, and for the first time, I now 'get' hi-def recordings. 24/96 and 24/192 sound remarkable. Wood and brass sound 'there'.

Great stuff.

Better late than never. Indeed the 555 sometimes needs some more time to appreciate, but when people get it they don't want to live without it anymore. I have seen quite often that people described that they had it for a home demo and where not impressed, until they gave it back and where sad as they missed it, and of course bought it immediately after.

Glad to hear it's all worked out well in the end.

With your excellent system, I wonder if upgrading your cables to the TQ ultra blacks would likewise make a noticeable improvement?

Cables are definitely in my sights. Thinking about SL, Vertere or TQ UB as you suggest. Only problem with TQ is that they don't do a Din>XLR which both SL and Vertere do.

Decisions, decisions.

Yessss.... 555PS is adictive. A bit like with Cuban cigars - once you try the best it's hard to go back to anything else.

I'm sure if you emailed geoff merigan at TQ they might well do a din>xlr for you , they are generally quite helpful.

I've auditioned the SL cables and decided they are not for me, but that said, they are highly regarded in general  on this forum.

Never heard vertere but again no doubt very good...

I suppose the best thing to do is audition all three, sounds like great fun...

Possibly, but that would be a sacrilege... DR = Dominican Republic

Tried talking to TQ already. Geoff said they have no plans to do a din to xlr. Such a shame, I like TQ a lot.

I think a bake off between SL and Vertere is my New Year resolution

Sounds like a good plan...

I have a 555dr on home dem hooked up to a n272 with a 300dr and I must say it is so much better than the xpsdr that i tried previously, hard to describe what it does but just makes everything sound right. Just a pity it's so expensive.

IntoTheVoid,

One of the significant things I liked (in addition to what you describe) about the 555PSDR, when it replaced an XPS on my DAC, was that music sounded so much more real and enjoyable when played quietly.  This was with a 250.2 at the time.  Now with the 250DR my system sounds amazing at a low volume, in a way I have never before experienced at home.

Given the change it's brought I no longer play anything quietly
