2016 short tally

Posted by: Haim Ronen on 24 December 2016

A quick easy look, a reminder of what music arrived this year to the Ronens.

Total of 39 CDs, three of which are still on their way, one of them edging the world record for the longest time being in a 'shipped' mode (three months).  One album was blues, two classical and the rest were jazz, mostly piano trios. Only four of them were new releases and just two without a piano. The dominant label was Venus Jazz (Japan) with 13 discs and Jan Lundgren was the artist I explored the most with 9 albums.

The most outstanding albums were:

Disappointment of the year (not really bad but was expecting more):

What is your tally (if it is not too complicated to figure)?

You have gotten some very fine albums listed. I also have to make sure that I get the Lundgren One. Thanks for reminding me.

Haim,

I was going to scold you for your unbalanced division of genres (2 classical vs. 36 jazz) and then I remembered to look in the mirror .  I may have succumbed to breaking my mold with 1 or 2 jazz and then 99.999% of the rest is classical although I did benefit directly from your jazz frenzy.  Thank you for that but it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

The year isn't over yet but here is the rough tally with about 200 orders placed, 700 CD's (combination of single discs and box sets), 30 vinyl LP's.  I can only think of two non-classical albums out of the lot.

An extraordinary year by all accounts in terms of recording quality.  I am noticing really high quality especially among the smaller name labels.  This is probably imagined as I probably think the same thing every year?

Very impressive, Doug. We are going to have you sign a SALT agreement to prevent you from overtaking the world of reproduced music. Any duds among the 700 or were they all enjoyable? What percentage of the lot (hopefully a single digit) you still didn't get a chance to listen to?

Haim, this was a bad year for me as I had no main system for at least half the year.  So I am playing catchup (no pun intended) but in reality in a typical year I never would listen to everything that comes in 100% but probably I listen to more hours of music than the equivalent hours on the new music coming in.  The reason is that I get stuck on certain music and can listen to one CD for weeks on end.  The good news is that CD's don't expire (at least I hope not).  While new stuff is coming in I may at the time be listening to something I bought 10 or 20 or 30 years ago for the first time.

This year also showed me how many mistakes I've made.  In the past, Amazon would remove an item I just purchased.  For some reason, this year it stopped doing this and so there are many things that I purchased multiple copies of.  The worst one was Hewitt's Beethoven Piano Sonatas Vol. 6.  I now have three copies.  (and I don't really like Hewitt's Beethoven).  And I think I also have two copies of Benjamin Grosvenor Homages.  So I had to kick myself a couple of times but surprisingly it is rare that this happens considering the volume I have to manage.

I am a visual person so often I get confused when record companies reissue something with a different cover.  I hate them for that.  Then I sometimes can't remember if I bought something already or just wanted to buy something.  Did I see it here when someone else listened to something I wanted or was it just in my Wish Lists which probably has 4 or 5,000 items in them.

Yes, there are probably lots of duds but I never toss things and give everything a second chance.  Time and mood is always changing I think I have every CD / LP / DVD / Bluray / VHS / Book that I have ever bought in my life.  I guess I like to collect things and have a library that I can see and touch.
